Description

Overview:
Contributes to the growth, financial stability, and status of The Carle Health system, which, in turn, contributes to increased quality of patient care, reimbursement, regulatory compliance and reduced risks. Ensures maintenance of medical record documentation and assures coding is confidential, complete, accurate, timely, and in compliance with internal and external standards and regulations. Plans, organizes, and leads the Health Information Management department functions including professional and facility coding, clinical documentation improvement, scanning, release of information, chart analysis, radiology file room, central dictation, recovery audit contractor (RAC) activity, charge master coding activities, and long-term paper storage. Serves as a resource for HIM topics to medical and administrative committees as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Assures technical expertise of the staff through continuing education and career path development, recognition of skills and talents, and succession planning.
  • Collaborates with clinicians, business partners and senior leadership to prioritize data-driven projects, and to provide quality information to support various initiatives.
  • Analyzes regulatory information and materials for impact on the hospital environment, identifies affected functions, and works with them to implement changes.
  • Oversees the development, review, and revision of department policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates accountability through passion for excellence, setting ambitious goals, holding self and others accountable for defined expectations and timelines, taking responsibility for outcomes, eliminating barriers, and achieving results.
  • Accountable for monitoring and demonstrating opportunities in enhancing revenue through new volume, programmatic service line growth (new procedures), cost containment (inventory and cost per case reduction), loss/waste control, enhancing resource utilization (labor/equipment/materials) or improving policy.
  • Accountable for preparation and monitoring of operating and capital budgets and achieving budgetary success on an annual basis.
  • Establishes and ensures that the overall objectives relating to the Carle Experience are achieved.
  • Provides leadership, vision, and management to assigned department(s).
  • Sets departmental strategic direction and goals and develops appropriate tactical plans to meet them

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree: Health Information Management or
  • Master’s Degree: Health Information Management or Health Informatics or MBA

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Health Information Management Leadership - 5 years (Director level preferred)

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with ability to motivate team.
  • Proven management and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of all major aspects of health information management functions
  • Knowledge of hospital and physician coding and billing processes.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulatory requirement for record documentation, payment and release of information.
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to medical record management
  • Knowledge in HIPAA privacy laws.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
  • Ability to collaborate with all levels in the organization.
