POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Human Resources serves as a strategic partner to the Chief People Officer, providing leadership and direction in developing and executing human capital strategies that support Port Houston’s mission, values, and business objectives. This role oversees key HR functions, including consultation and guidance, talent acquisition, employee relations, HR policy development, performance management, compensation and benefits, and compliance. The Director leads initiatives to drive a high performing, engaged, and resilient workforce while ensuring alignment with organizational goals and legal requirements. As a member of the People leadership team, the Director articulates the value of human resources to internal stakeholders and ensures the delivery of responsive, ethical, and forward-thinking people practices consistent with Port Houston’s broader strategic direction.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Sociology, or related major in a public or accredited private academic institution required
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • 10+ years of related human resources experience required
  • 5+ years supervisory experience required
  • SHRM-SCP/SHRM-CP or SPHR/PHR certification required

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to employment, benefits and payroll administration including FMLA, ADA, COBRA, HIPAA, FLSA, etc.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of HR strategies that align with the company’s talent and organizational goals.
  • Ensures that Port Houston HR policies and programs reflect best practices and regulatory compliance while fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Handle complex employee relations issues and disputes while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
  • Consult with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the CPO, on personnel matters
  • Provide day-to-day performance management guidance, including coaching, career development, and disciplinary actions
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of compensation structures and benefits programs that attract and retain top talent.
  • Administer a comprehensive benefits program that is both seamless and compliant with regulatory requirements
  • Serve as a key leader for the organization-wide ERP implementation (Workday), providing strategic guidance and subject matter expertise on HR processes Develop and maintain a human resource information system that meets the organization’s personnelinformation needs • Manage the budget and other financial measures of the Human Resources department
