Job Description "Energy is an exciting place to be working as we continue to see changes in the way we generate, transmit and use electricity across all our markets as we work to decarbonise the industry." – Mark Lampard, Sector Director - Transmission & Distribution Lead the strategic design approach as Director Major Projects, Design & Delivery, playing a senior leadership role in the design phase for critical Transmission and Distribution related infrastructure projects across the Eastern States of Australia, based in AECOM’s Sydney office. In this role, you will elevate our multidisciplinary design reputation in the energy sector and lead integrated technical frameworks for major grid and related infrastructure. This role will suit a Design Director looking to make a difference across major and complex projects where understanding client needs, leading design and engineering excellence, while collaborating across key stakeholder groups, are core parts of your skillset. This leadership role offers exposure to complex, high-profile projects and the opportunity to build long-term client relationships while contributing to Australia’s energy transition on major projects. You will also have scope to mentor, coach, and develop the next generation of engineers in the Transmission and Distribution discipline – this can include people leadership responsibilities as the team grows. How you’ll make a difference: Lead and develop the design approach on major energy projects, unifying diverse stakeholders (including client and construction partners) across multiple technical disciplines behind a clear technical project strategy. Provide senior technical and delivery leadership, enabling the delivery of complex Transmission & Distribution engineering workstreams—shaping strategy, solving technical challenges, and influencing project outcomes. Operate at the forefront of major transmission projects building strategic, trusted relationships while working with AECOM Major Project and Energy leaders, regulated state-based network organisations, and design‑and‑construct partners. Ensure design excellence across AECOM and client technical teams ensuring high standards of quality, safety, digital innovation, and client satisfaction. Supports the development of a high-performance design culture based on accountability and continuous improvement, through mentoring, coaching and development of others across project, workshare and technical teams. Apply strong commercial judgement to align scope, budget, schedule, and long‑term objectives while finding common ground among stakeholders. You will be known for your leadership abilities, bringing together diverse internal, client and external teams, gaining agreement on the design approach for major, complex energy projects. Inclusive leadership and design rigour across engineering requirements will be your norm, along with an ability to problem-solve and experience in delivery of complex projects. Experience across energy related projects is required, especially a track record of major projects at scale for the energy sector. Proven design and engineering leadership, recognised in integrate diverse technical disciplines to drive successful project delivery toward a shared goal for major grid scale transmission projects. Registration on the National Engineering Register in Australia will be required, ideally supported by a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) designation or equivalent international accreditation. Capability in operating and leading teams, as a technical and senior delivery lead across complex transmission programs, managing major client work packages. Client relationship and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain positive client relationships as a trusted advisor with internal and client expert technical teams. Ability to provide commercial judgement and pragmatism, understanding design and build cost considerations for clients. A passion for mentoring and the development of others design and engineering technical abilities, helping the next generation of AECOM engineers to build their careers.
