Description SUMMARY: Serves the canonical needs of the Diocese of Orlando by assisting the Chancellor of Canonical Affairs and the Office of Tribunal and Canonical Services. This task involves providing canonical support and counsel to different chancery departments, serving as a tribunal judge in some cases of marriage nullity, and other tribunal-related matters. Commitment: Individually and collectively, we are steadfast to the team and its purpose. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Assisting the Chancellor for Canonical Affairs with administrative matters; Conducts laicization canonical instructions as requested; Conducts Prior Investigations as determined by canon 1717 CIC; Acts as an Auditor to collect the proofs in a canonical trial and hand those collected over to the judge, as established by canon 1428 §1, §2, §3; Acts as a canonical consultor for the resolution of issues related to the areas of Sacraments, Sacramental Records, and Sacramental Register as foreseen by Diocesan Policies on the matter; assists OCIA directors in determining the marital status of candidates and catechumens; Assists Parish Marriage Coordinators with matters related to the licit and valid celebration of marriages. ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS A TRIBUNAL STAFF MEMBER Reviews petitions for dispensations and permissions; assists in the process as Canonical Consultant to Tribunal Staff; Participates as a judge or defender of the bond in contentious cases regarding marriage nullity; Sets up appointments, conducts interviews with the petitioner, respondent, and witnesses, as needed; Takes Rogatories from witnesses or parties from other Dioceses when requested; Works collaboratively as a team member with the Collegiate Court and the Tribunal staff. Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, ability or physical demands required. Not less than thirty years of age as required by canon 1420 §5 of the Code of Canon Law. A person of unimpaired reputation. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE A doctorate or at least a licentiate in Canon Law; experience in pastoral listening and interviewing skills; strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable in a culturally diverse setting. Requires at least three years of experience in contentious trials, special processes, and penal processes; pastoral sensitivity; and a commitment to the Catholic Magisterium. LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION SKILLS Proficient in English across all the following areas: reading, analyzing, and interpreting testimonies and technical procedures; writing reports; and effectively presenting information related to different canonical matters. Ability to speak and write in the necessary pastoral language. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must be able to maintain confidentiality. Must be capable of working with a diverse range of individuals of different religions, life stages, and levels of spirituality. Must be a practicing Catholic. A satisfactory background check and training in accordance with the Diocesan Safe Environment policy are required. REASONING ABILITY Ability to analyze and interpret; problem-solving skills and decision-making related to marriage cases. Ability to understand a variety of instructions in written and oral forms. TECHNICAL SKILLS Proficiency in MS Office Suite, research, and email as needed. Able to learn canonical software when appropriate. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Required to sit for extended periods of time, use hands in repetitive motion tasks, handle objects or talk or hear. Required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. WORKING CONDITIONS The employee must be physically present in the office, able to work cooperatively with other members of the staff and clients and be able to multi-task. The employee is expected to work regular office hours. Reliable, insured vehicle and ability to travel within Diocese of Orlando is required.
