Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Data is the lifeblood of Taskrabbit, and we are looking for a visionary leader to join as our Director of Data Engineering. In this critical role, you will own the data infrastructure that powers our entire business. You will be responsible for hiring, coaching, and directly managing the Data Engineering and Analytics Engineering teams, guiding them to design and build high-scale, reliable systems that ensure data accuracy, availability, and trustworthiness.
As the Director of Data Engineering, you will be the senior-most engineer in the data organization, responsible for setting the vision, strategy, and standards for our data platform. You will implement best-in-class data warehousing practices, manage data governance, and create robust processes for data monitoring, alerting, and anomaly detection. You will partner closely with leaders across Data Science, Machine Learning, Product, and Engineering to define your team’s roadmap, prioritize high-impact work, and deliver against timelines with high-quality software. This is a strategic role that requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and a passion for building the foundational systems that enable a data-driven culture.

We welcome applicants from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Below gives you a sense of how we’re thinking about what you’ll need to be successful in the role.

  • 5+ years of experience as a data engineering leader, with a proven track record of scaling, managing, and building high-performing, geographically distributed data teams.
  • 2+ years of experience establishing and enforcing data lifecycle management (such as data retention policies and data disposal procedures).
  • Demonstrated experience in leading data initiatives for compliance, including working with regulations like GDPR, CCPA, or similar, and supporting organizations in successfully achieving and maintaining certifications such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001.
  • Skilled in coaching and leading other engineers, with the ability to provide deep technical guidance when needed.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with a bias for action and the ability to proactively drive complex projects to completion, and effectively communicate the business value of technical initiatives to stakeholders across the organization.
  • Experience leading a data organization through the implementation of security and compliance initiatives.
  • Deep experience with modern cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and data warehouse technologies like Snowflake.
  • Expertise in SQL, data modeling, and at least one scripting language (e.g., Python).
  • Experience with modern data stack tools such as dbt, Airflow, and BI/visualization tools like Looker or Sigma.
  • Experience with or a strong understanding of semantic layer technologies (e.g., dbt Semantic Layer, LookML) is a significant plus.
  • Expertise in Agile/Lean software development methodologies.
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Physics, or another technical field
