Position Summary: The Director of Development is responsible for designing and executing fundraising strategies that secure critical financial support for Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas, with a primary focus on major gifts and annual giving. This role manages a portfolio of key donors and prospects, develops comprehensive cultivation plans, and aligns fundraising activities with the agency’s long-term mission and goals. A commitment to building authentic, lasting relationships with donors is essential. The Director brings strategic insight, disciplined planning, and measurable results to all development efforts.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Business, Communications, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. Minimum of 5+ years of experience in fundraising or sales, with at least 3+ years directly managing a major gift portfolio preferred.
  • Fundraising and Donor Management Skills: Proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors. Strong knowledge of major giving principles, annual fundraising strategies, planned giving, and donor stewardship best practices.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with donor management systems (e.g., Bloomerang, E-Tapestry, or similar platforms) and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to manage donor pipelines, moves management systems, and reporting tools.
  • Commitment to Mission and Values: Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a strong commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. Willingness to abide by Catholic Social Teachings in carrying out the duties of the position and to build relationships with individuals of all backgrounds.
  • Communication and Relationship Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; ability to craft compelling cases for support, deliver persuasive asks, and foster trust with diverse stakeholders. Ability to relate to individuals at all levels, including donors, board members, volunteers, and community leaders.
  • Strategic Thinking and Initiative: Strong initiative, self-direction, and the ability to develop and implement strategic fundraising plans. Comfortable balancing multiple priorities and working independently while collaborating with colleagues.
  • Attention to Detail and Confidentiality: High attention to detail in managing donor information, recording interactions, and producing accurate fundraising reports. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and donor trust.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a faith-based or mission-driven organization.
  • Knowledge of planned giving strategies and legacy giving cultivation.
  • Familiarity with rural communities and/or Catholic parish communities.
    Work Environment: This role operates primarily in a professional office setting, with regular work involving standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. The Director of Development will also spend significant time meeting with donors and community partners in a variety of environments, including offices, businesses, donor homes, and event venues. The successful candidate must be comfortable representing Catholic Charities in a professional and mission-driven manner across diverse settings and must maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive donor information.
    Travel: Regular local and regional travel within the 31-county service area is required to cultivate and steward donor relationships. Travel primarily occurs during normal business hours using an agency vehicle, though occasional overnight travel may be necessary for donor meetings, conferences, or professional development. Adaptability to different meeting environments and occasional extended periods of driving are essential components of this role.
    Physical Demands: The physical demands of this role are typical of professional fundraising work. The employee must be able to move within and between meeting locations, lift materials weighing up to 25 pounds (such as event supplies or donor materials), and work at a desk for extended periods. Effective communication, including the ability to engage in active listening and deliver compelling presentations, is essential. Visual requirements include reading printed and digital materials and perceiving visual cues during in-person interactions.

    Pay Range: $60,000–$80,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
