Description

The Sacramento Zoo is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and mission-driven Director of Education to join our Leadership Team. Reporting directly to the Zoo Director/CEO, this position plays a critical role in shaping and delivering the Zoo’s educational vision, inspiring conservation action, and fostering community engagement through innovative learning experiences.
As a key member of the Zoo’s leadership, the Director of Education oversees all aspects of the Education Department, including docent and volunteer management, educational programming, interpretive messaging, and community outreach. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader who can blend creativity with operational excellence to connect diverse audiences with wildlife and conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Museum Studies, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in informal science education, conservation education, or related fields, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience managing volunteers and staff.
  • Strong public speaking, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to translate complex conservation and science topics into engaging, accessible messaging.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget development, financial oversight, and resource management.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in educational programming.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

· Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.
· Ability to traverse zoo grounds.
· Ability to lift and carry 20 pounds.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs for audiences of all ages, both onsite and in the community.
  • Provide leadership to the zoo’s Education staff.
  • Manage and support the docent and volunteer programs, ensuring effective recruitment, training, and engagement.
  • Develop and oversee the Zoo’s interpretive messaging and exhibits, ensuring content aligns with conservation priorities and enhances visitor experiences.
  • Oversee the Zoo’s educational ambassador animal program, ensuring proper animal care, handler training, and program integration.
  • Manage the Zoo’s behind-the-scenes tour program, including staff training, safety protocols, and visitor experience.
  • Support the Development Department with fundraising efforts and events as needed, including donor engagement and educational components.
  • Build partnerships with schools, community organizations, and other institutions to expand the Zoo’s educational reach.
  • Serve as a member of the Zoo’s Leadership Team, contributing to organizational strategy, planning, and cross-departmental initiatives.
  • Develop, monitor, and manage the Education Department’s annual budget, ensuring prudent and disciplined allocation of resources.
  • Ensure all educational content meets professional and AZA standards for accessibility, accuracy, and inclusivity.
  • Additional responsibilities may occasionally be assigned as required to support organizational goals.
