EDUCATION:

  • 4-year college or equivalent experience

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive emergency management experience, with at least 3 years in a healthcare setting
  • Deep understanding of CMS Emergency Preparedness Rule, NIMS, and HICS frameworks
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed clinical operations
  • Previous experience interacting with Sr. Leadership

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree (e.g., MHA, MPH, MPA)
  • Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP), or related certification
  • Prior experience supporting ESRD or dialysis providers
  • Familiarity with ESRD Network coordination and patient transport protocols during disasters

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Up to 25% domestic travel may be required for site visits, training, exercises, or disaster response.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Crisis/Emergency Management: Provide leadership support during crisis events, including scheduling and facilitating status meetings; tracking completion of action plans; developing and distributing status updates; managing activation of recovery strategies; and creating post-incident reports. Ensure coordination of planning, testing, and response activities between crisis management, information technology, and information security.
  • Testing and Exercises: Oversee the testing of documented crisis management plans to provide reasonable assurances of effectiveness. Work with business units and Information Technology to ensure testing for critical systems, including third party systems to ensure that appropriate strategies are in place to respond to, restore, and minimize disruption to in-house and outsourced critical technology systems. Analyze testing results and ensure business lines remediate exceptions and incorporate lessons learned. Ensure testing activities are documented.
  • Emergency Notification System: Administer DaVita’s emergency notification system, including user access, training, documentation, testing, troubleshooting, data validation, and generation of emergency notifications, as required.
  • Provide oversight and project management for any Continual Improvement projects identified during Event Post Mortem After action plans.
  • Oversee the procurement and deployment of appropriate emergency infrastructure including back up power, back up communications, water availability, flood mitigation and similar systems.
  • Steering Committee and Board Reporting: Prepare and deliver periodic presentations to the various committees on the status of the Emergency Management Program, identified risks, and results of testing

Additional Accountabilities:

  • Maintain technical knowledge by tracking emerging trends in emergency management; attend educational workshops; review professional publications; and establish personal networks. Stay abreast of compliance with regulatory guidelines and requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with all Healthcare laws, rules, regulations, and prescribed policies/practices/procedures necessary to reduce risk and uphold ethical standards related to and required by one’s duties. Ensure alignment with national standards (e.g., NIMS, FEMA, ASPR TRACIE) and best practices in healthcare emergency management.
  • Lead regular training and tabletop/full-scale exercises across field operations, regional teams, and corporate leadership to ensure readiness and compliance.

Responsibilities

Leads enterprise-wide emergency management to support and improve DaVita’s capability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disruptions. The Director of Emergency Management is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of comprehensive emergency preparedness and response programs across all dialysis clinics, regional offices, central business offices and support centers nationwide. This position ensures organizational resilience through effective planning, training, and coordination with internal stakeholders, external agencies and DaVita’s senior leadership team. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with hands-on experience in healthcare emergency management, particularly in supporting medically vulnerable populations such as patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
