A day in the life. As the Chief Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the overall maintenance and engineering operations of the hotel. This includes managing the physical plant, ensuring all building systems operate efficiently, and maintaining the property in excellent condition. The Chief Engineer leads a team of technicians and ensures compliance with safety standards, preventive maintenance schedules, and energy conservation initiatives. To be successful in the Director of Engineering position, you: Supervise and coordinate the daily operations of the engineering department. Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs for all hotel equipment and systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, elevators, etc.). Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA and fire safety codes. Manage energy conservation programs and sustainability initiatives. Oversee maintenance of guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house, and exterior grounds. Respond promptly to guest and staff maintenance requests and emergencies. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs. Manage departmental budget, including labor, supplies, and capital expenditures. Hire, train, and evaluate engineering staff; ensure ongoing development and safety training. Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized repairs and renovations. Participate in hotel leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning. Maintain engineering related check book accounting procedures to ensure the department operates within budgeted guidelines while maintaining required stock of supplies and materials. Understand the engineering records and filing system to support, Preventive Maintenance Programs, Capital Projects, Life Safety Systems, and Inspections, etc. Tour hotel complex daily identifying items requiring engineering, housekeeping, or other departmental actions. Requirements Experience of 2-5 years required in commercial or institutional maintenance environment. Hotel experience preferred. College degree or courses will be considered helpful, engineering related preferred. Vocational schooling, military training, certification and/or experience in building related trades required in 1 or more of the following areas: HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and Carpentry. Knowledge of hotel operations, security and safety programs, personnel and labor relations, repairs, maintenance, quality assurance programs. Be skilled in several areas such as HVAC, electrical, carpentry, dry walling, painting, plumbing, roofing, and landscaping with or without reasonable accommodation. Leadership skills to motivate and develop staff and to ensure accomplishment of goals. Able to set priorities, plan, organize, and delegate. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to adapt communication style to suit different audiences, such as effectively communicating with supervisors, coworkers, public etc.
