CMAW Canada is looking to hire a Director of Expansion and Growth that will play a key role in leading and managing efforts to help expand CMAW across Canada strengthening our union. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Outreach and Recruitment: help to identify potential new members or workplaces that would benefit from union representation. Conduct outreach campaigns to engage workers and employers explaining the benefits of unionizing.
Strategy Development: Develop expansion and growth strategies tailored to specific workplaces or industries. This can involve assessing workers’ needs, understanding company dynamics, and creating a plan for a successful unionization drive.
Training and Support: Train workers who are interested in becoming union organizers. This can include educating them about the union’s goals, how to approach coworkers, and how to navigate the organizing process.
Building Worker Committees: Help form committees of workers who will champion the cause in their workplaces, gather support, and help lead the campaign.
Communication: Communicate with workers to raise awareness about workplace issues, labor rights, and the benefits of union membership. Help coordinate meetings, rallies, or other events.
Engaging with Employers: The director may also communicate with employers, advocating for workers’ rights and promoting union recognition.
Ensuring Legal Compliance: The Director of Expansion and Growth is responsible for ensuring that the union’s efforts to expand and grow comply with all applicable labor laws. As a strategic leader, the Director guides the process of organizing workers, whether forming a new union or strengthening an existing one. Their role focuses on empowering workers, advocating for their rights, and ensuring that all union activities are legally sound, ultimately driving successful unionization outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive previous union organizing experience and knowledge of CMAW Canada’s history is essential.
  • Extensive experience in the construction industry.Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point & Publisher.
  • Good time management, scheduling and organizational skills.
  • Be self-directing with a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills that are clearly evident both in person and over the phone, including a demonstrated ability to recruit and motivate volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and self-starting.
  • Ability to track, compile, and analyze campaign data, continuously assess progress and develop plans on how to overcome barriers.
  • Working knowledge of organizing in provincial and federal jurisdictions, and the procedures of applicable Labour Relations Board.
  • Ability to take direction and work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or participation in trade union activities are essential.
Responsibilities
  • The following are key operational duties, but are not limited to these functions:
  • Work closely with the President, Secretary Treasurer and CMAW Organizing Committee, on expansion and growth activities. Will assist with organizing drives and issue-oriented campaigns.Develop and execute CMAW Canada’s expansion and growth strategy.
  • Research potential targets for union expansion and growth opportunities.
  • Follow up on all opportunities, working in collaboration with local business agents and representatives.
  • Meet with prospective members and employers.
  • Communicate and report to the President, Secretary Treasurer, and Organizing Committee.
  • Prepare and participate in meetings, demonstrations and rallies.
  • Mobilize workers and coordinate actions.
  • Train and assess union support workers and leadership potential for future growth with minimal assistance, including motivating committee members.
  • Be able to work remotely and independently as a team member.
  • Other duties as assigned.
