JOB DESCRIPTION

Neptune Theatre is searching for a strategic, experienced, solutions focused Director of Finance to lead the financial operations of our organization. The Director of Finance plays a key leadership role in aligning financial strategy with organizational goals, ensuring sustainable practices, and providing clear, actionable insights to support decision-making across all departments. This role requires a big-picture thinker with a strong command of day-to-day financial management, budgeting, forecasting, and risk oversight, as well as the ability to lead and modernize financial systems and processes. The successful candidate will work closely with department leaders to support planning, reporting, and resource allocation with clarity and confidence.
The Director of Finance will ensure Neptune’s values of safety, collaboration, inclusivity, and excellence are at the forefront of their work. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Finance leads a team of fulltime finance staff.

REQUIREMENTS

• CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
• 5–7 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, including a minimum of 2–3 years in a leadership or decision-making role; experience in a not-for-profit, public sector, or cultural organization is an asset.
• Proven ability to develop and manage complex budgets and financial systems.
• Strong knowledge of fund accounting, government funding, and charitable compliance.
• Demonstrated leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
• Experience with financial reporting software such as Blackbaud, Netsuite or similar.
• Experience in the performing arts or cultural sector.
• Knowledge of CRA charitable reporting and restricted funding structures.
• Familiarity with EDI-informed financial practices and community-based accountability.
• Exhibit a positive and collaborative attitude, fostering teamwork and cooperation.

• Lead the development of annual operating budgets, multi-year financial forecasts, and long-range financial planning aligned with Neptune’s mission and strategic priorities.
• Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate monthly and year-end financial statements, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies.
• Manage cash flow, reserves, and investments, while implementing effective financial controls and risk management practices to support operational sustainability.
• Partner with department leaders to deliver financial analysis and insights that support data-informed planning, programming, and decision-making.
• Lead the annual audit process, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors and ensuring a smooth and efficient audit cycle.
• Prepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and recommendations to the Executive Director, Finance & Audit Committee, and Board of Directors.
• Mentor and supervise the finance team, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and growth-oriented work environment.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, safety regulations, union agreements, grant and funding requirements, and organizational policies.
• Contribute as a key member of the Senior Management team, providing financial guidance and participating in strategic discussions, partnerships, and initiatives that advance Neptune Theatre’s mission and values.
