DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES

SUMMARY

We are seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead our HR initiatives at the Winnipeg Free Press and subsidiary companies. This pivotal role will oversee all aspects of human resources management, ensuring that our workforce is engaged, skilled, and aligned with our organizational goals. The position is based in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The incumbent will provide expertise across a variety of human resources areas including labour and employee relations, collective bargaining agreement administration and negotiations, recruitment, compensation, disability benefit management, performance management, leadership and coaching, along with health and safety administration and legislative compliance.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of the Human Resource Management Certificate Program or BA with Major in HR/Business Administration
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated knowledge and experience working in a unionized environment, participating in the collective bargaining process, administering collective agreements, policies and practices, benefits and other related human resource activities.
  • Knowledge of relevant Acts and employment law, Provincial legislation and Employment Standards
  • A Certified Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation is a definite asset.

· Participation on the safety committee, and other interdepartmental committees as required.

  • Demonstrated confidence, capability, initiative, and judgement to execute and guide the responsibilities of HR function on a day-to-day basis, while appropriately seeking support and guidance when situations warrant.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and effective computer skills with the ability to create systems and databases aligned with the needs of the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Actively participate as a member of the senior leadership team to develop and implement workforce planning initiatives that support organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Work collaboratively to maintain effective lines of communication with employees, senior management, and bargaining units to foster a collaborative workplace environment.
  • Actively participate on behalf of the Company in the collective bargaining processes with its two bargaining units. Ensure that issues of importance for the Company are identified to ensure an efficient and effective bargaining process.
  • Identify, develop, and implement HR strategies and initiatives that support the Company’ overall organizational objectives.
  • Provide consultative advice and expertise on human resource matters, including collective agreement administration, legislative requirements along with policy development, interpretation, and application.
  • Oversee the administration of employee benefits, including disability management, wage and salary administration. Ensure benefits and compensation practices are in compliance with collective agreements and policy provisions, while ensuring that total compensation packages effectively attract and retain talented employees.
  • Draw from best practices to develop systems to recruit, select and retain the best talent, and provide identification of development opportunities for growth for current employees, along with performance management.
  • Identify areas for improvement and develop solutions that support organizational effectiveness.
  • Oversee budgeting for HR functions and ensure cost-effective operations.
  • Work with the management team to successfully onboard new employees, including the development of accurate and up-to-date job descriptions.
  • Main point of contact on HR-related inquiries. Review employee complaints, document concerns and issues, identify and clarify problems, conduct investigations, facilitate mediation meetings.
