JOB SUMMARY
United American Indian Involvement (UAII) is dedicated to advancing the health, wellness, and cultural vitality of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Through innovative programs and advocacy, UAII serves as a bridge between cultural traditions and contemporary services, empowering individuals and families while fostering cultural preservation.
The Director of Marketing and Communications leads UAII’s strategic efforts to amplify its mission, programs, and impact through effective marketing and communication strategies. This role is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive marketing plans, enhancing brand visibility, managing public relations, and ensuring cohesive, culturally relevant messaging across all platforms. The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with extensive experience in communications and marketing, a strong understanding of Native American cultures, and a commitment to community empowerment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE)
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in PR, marketing, or communications, preferably in nonprofit or community-focused organizations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong storytelling ability.
- Proficiency in digital marketing tools (e.g., Google Analytics, social media management tools, email marketing platforms).
- Experience working with or for Native American communities, with knowledge of cultural protocols and values.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
- Graphic design skills (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in PR, marketing, or communications, preferably in nonprofit or community-focused organizations.
- Experience with Native-focused media outlets and networks.
- Knowledge of fundraising and donor engagement strategies.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Deep appreciation for American Indian cultures, knowledge of tribal governance structures, and excellent communication and networking skills.
- Knowledge of social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
- Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (PL93-638).
- Knowledge of Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (PL 94-437).
- Knowledge of the Affordable Care Act (PL 111-148).
- Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) cultures and lifestyles, and work effectively with AI/AN population.
- Effective oral and written communications skills with sensitivity to lifestyles of targeted participants.
- Skills in operating personal computer using a variety of computer software (Microsoft Office, Adobe, Microsoft Teams, Zoom).
- Ability to create and/or develop content.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information and comply with all applicable federal and state privacy laws, as well as UAII policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).

Responsibilities:
The Director Marketing and Communications is responsible for shaping and executing the public relations and marketing strategies that elevate UAII’s visibility, engagement, and impact. This role involves creating culturally sensitive messaging, managing media relations, and leading marketing campaigns that align with UAII’s mission. The ideal candidate is a skilled storyteller with a deep understanding of Native American issues, a passion for community empowerment, and experience in PR and marketing.
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that aligns with UAII’s mission and goals.
- Lead branding efforts to ensure a consistent and culturally respectful organizational identity.
- Advise executive leadership on communication strategies, crisis management, and public relations opportunities.
Marketing & Communications Management
- Oversee the creation of marketing campaigns to promote UAII programs, events, and initiatives.
- Ensure high-quality content development across all channels, including social media, websites, newsletters, press releases, and promotional materials.
- Manage the organization’s digital presence, including SEO strategies, website updates, and online advertising.
- Monitor and analyze the effectiveness of marketing efforts using key performance metrics and data-driven strategies.
- Create and execute marketing campaigns that highlight UAII’s programs, events, and mission.
- Develop a content calendar for social media, newsletters, and other communication channels.
- Oversee the design and production of promotional materials, including brochures, posters, and digital content.
- Ensure all marketing materials align with UAII’s brand identity and values.
Media and Public Relations
- Develop and implement a comprehensive public relations strategy to enhance UAII’s reputation.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with media outlets, particularly Native-focused and community-based organizations.
- Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other communication materials.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and interviews.
- Coordinate media coverage for events, initiatives, and organizational achievements.
- Serve as a spokesperson for UAII, representing the organization to media and community stakeholders.
- Cultivate relationships with media outlets, including Native-focused publications and platforms.
- Manage media inquiries, press releases, and proactive media outreach secure positive coverage.
Team Development and Supervision
- Lead, mentor, and develop a marketing and communications team, including staff, contractors, and interns.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment focused on creativity and results.
Community Engagement
- Build and maintain partnerships with tribal organizations, nonprofits, and community leaders to expand UAII’s reach.
- Ensure culturally sensitive and inclusive communication that reflects UAII’s values and the communities it serves.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with program directors and leadership to align PR and marketing efforts with organizational goals.
- Supervise and mentor any staff, contractors, or interns involved in PR and marketing activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
