POSITION DETAILS

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

The following knowledge and abilities are in addition to those outlined in the classification.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of Native American and Alaska Native peoples.
  • Tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, and government-to-government consultation protocols.
  • Educational equity issues and culturally responsive practices affecting Indigenous students.
  • Oregon Senate Bill 13 (Tribal History/Shared History) and other relevant legislation.
  • Indigenous pedagogies, cultural identity development, and Indigenous language preservation.
  • The role and operation of public school systems and their interaction with Native communities.
  • Program design, supervision, evaluation, and budgeting within public or educational settings.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Community Engagement, or a related field. Master’s degree in Education, Public Administration, or related field preferred. State of Oregon Administrative License preferred. Work experience may be a substitute for a degree.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 7 years of experience working in collaboration with Native American or Alaska Native communities, preferably in an educational, advocacy, or public service context, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory, program leadership, or cross-departmental coordination role. Experience in education, community outreach, or culturally responsive programming with Indigenous populations. Deep understanding of tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, and the diverse histories and cultures of Native peoples.
Any other combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work hours may include on- and off-campus evening and weekend activities and meetings and district, school and student functions.

DATA, MONITORING, AND ACCOUNTABILITY

  • Monitor student data (e.g., academic progress, attendance, and engagement) to ensure culturally responsive interventions and supports are in place.
  • Provide regular updates to district leadership on the status and needs of Native students, elevating community feedback to inform district planning and accountability.
  • Contribute to the development of long-term district goals that align with the aspirations of Indigenous communities and promote educational sovereignty.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Racial Equity and Social Justice Commitment by developing a thorough knowledge and application of the district Racial Educational Equity Policy and other board policies; participate in staff development, in-services and trainings related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in K – 12 education; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend and implement improvements to educational practices with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community.
