Description:

Position Title: Director of Organising
Reports To: NSW Branch Secretary
Hours of Work: 38 hrs per week
Salary Range: According to experience

CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop, implement and oversight workplace organising strategies that increases member numbers, grows member activism and develops workplace leadership that delivers on issues of member interest.
  • Ensure an integrated approach to all functions of the Organising Team including the education of delegates, access and availability of tools and resources, and the organising of individual or multiple workplaces, to enable member and delegate empowerment.
  • Build and maintain capacity within the organising team, ensuring all staff receive training, development and support white carrying out the duties and responsibilities assigned.
  • Supervise and manage organisers ensuring that work is performed to plans and in accordance with the goals and objectives of the union at any time.
  • Act as RTBU spokesperson on matters requiring subject area expertise, as and when required or directed. Develop, implement and oversight industrial and industry campaign strategies that engages community support and are based on the industrial priorities of the Union.
  • Maintain working knowledge of industrial relations systems and processes, ensuring Organisers, Delegates and members are able distinguish between local-level issues and those requiring referral to the RTW’s Industrial Officers.
  • Provide timely, relevant and contemporary policy and strategy advice to the Branch Secretary and Divisions, and identify and keep abreast of, future issues requiring research and policy or membership services development, enabling the Union to remain viable and relevant to its members.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND CAPABILITIES

  • Demonstrated experience of contemporary organising and campaign methods and implementing campaign-based strategies.
  • Demonstrated record of successful management of an organising team, and in leading, motivating, developing and supporting Organisers to shift from representation to organising.
  • Proven ability to identify emerging issues with a potential for growing or developing the membership.
  • Proven communication (written and oral), interpersonal, negotiation, facilitation and networking skills with the ability to clearly articulate Union priorities, act as Union spokesperson, and develop and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage reporting requirements and deliver on deadlines.
    The Position is based in the Head Office, Level 4, 321 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000.

The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTW) is a union representing workers in the transport industry. Membership of the union is open to anyone who works anywhere in light rail, rail or the public bus industry.
The role of Director of Organising is dynamic and fast paced. It requires an individual who exhibits exemplary leadership and management skills with a focus on campaigning and organising.
The principle responsibility of the Director of Organising is the development and implementation of contemporary union growth and change strategies, that deliver on issues of member interest and Union priority, through campaigns and organising.
