THE ROLE The Director of Retail at Real Madrid will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of merchandise operations, ensuring high-quality experience for customers and efficient operational delivery. The Director of Merchandising will focus on maximizing the commercial potential of the merchandise operations by driving sales, optimizing the customer journey, and ensuring product availability, all while maintaining the integrity of the Real Madrid brand. This includes, but is not limited to, purchasing, inventory control, staffing, training, cost controls, and accounting procedures. This role also involves inspiring and leading the team to foster a culture of excellence while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless operations, achieve budget goals, and deliver outstanding service across all merchandise locations and events. Manage the purchase and inventory control process to ensure optimal stock levels and minimize losses. Oversee the design and layout of all retail locations, ensuring that they align with Real Madrid's brand standards and provide exceptional customer experience. Implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for retail operations, ensuring that all targets are met, and that the Customer Experience remains a top priority. Lead relationships with external vendors and partners to secure the best products, services, and deals for the club’s merchandise operations. Ensure compliance with financial, operational, and safety standards, including cash handling procedures and inventory management. As a leader, this role sets an example and ensures strict adherence to all safety and health protocols. Drive the effective use of technology and POS systems to support sales operations and enhance customer interaction. Oversee and lead the execution of both tangible and digital marketing and promotional strategies, ensuring a strong market presence, increased product visibility, and sales growth. This role requires a deep understanding of market trends, consumer behavior, and industry dynamics to drive impactful campaigns and maintain a competitive edge. Lead and manage the recruitment, training, and performance of all merchandising and retail staff, ensuring high standards of customer service and operational efficiency while actively promoting, monitoring, and nurturing a positive organizational culture and work environment. This role requires a strategic leader who can develop and drive the business strategy as Director of Merchandising while also having a deep understanding of operations and the ability to influence and mobilize teams to ensure seamless execution. Collaborate closely with key stakeholders, including the marketing and events teams, as well as partners in the USA and Europe, to align merchandise strategies with overall club objectives and ensure a cohesive global approach. Other duties as assigned by senior management. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, the candidate must be able to perform each essential duty above at the highest levels. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 8 years of experience with merchandising and retail management progressively customer-management roles in top-tier, branded sports, or entertainment companies. A proven track record having profitably grown a business, having developed, and implemented the appropriate policies and processes necessary to drive and manage a business, and having infused his/her teams with a clear and focused drive for measurable performance. Proven ability to build, grow, and inspire teams. Demonstrated true leadership ability and have strong cross-functional and team-building skills with an ability to manage effectively up, down and across an organization. He/She has a strong results orientation, a bias for action and “acts like an owner” in building business value. Detail-oriented and extremely organized with the ability to multi-task.
