Description

The Director of Safety will be responsible for the overall performance of the Safety & Compliance team ensuring the administration of all functions associated with vehicle and driver compliance and documentation of Abrams Auto Transport is completed and compliant with the directives of the MTO and DOT. The Director of Safety will ultimately be tasked with the objective of achieving and maintaining a 95% rating on the Canadian Labour Code Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration. This objective shall be accomplished through the delivery of driver, broker, and staff training in the transportation of vehicles, daily logbook, vehicle inspection reports, safe driving and strict adherence to the Ministry of Transportation rules and regulations. This individual will also be responsible for the auditing of maintenance and repair records as well as all required MTO and DOT compliant files.
The Director of Safety ensures workplace safety, with the goal of reducing injury and related legal issues. They must be well versed in the legal implications of injury and prevention tactics that help avoid injury or physical loss due to accident. They also need to be familiar with health and safety rules, and they will work closely with managerial staff to implement current guidelines. The job of the Director of Safety is to always enforce guidelines, and also to be intuitive and able to spot potential errors of judgement early on. For this reason, it is essential that they have an eye for detail and an ability to show good judgement in pressured situations. Knowledge of the complete requirements for the company is required to be able to educate staff appropriately. Along with inspecting and training colleagues, they must also be able to manage their fellow employees in case there is a safety emergency.

Job Duties

  • Minimize injuries, accidents, and health problems
  • Participate in the development of safety and health policies, practices, and procedures
  • Develop and maintain driver incentive program that promotes safe transportation behaviours
  • Ensure company compliance with all applicable laws governing vehicle transportation and environmental health and safety as well as MTO/DOT rules and regulations along with FAST and CTPAT programs
  • Ensure all employees and the company are equipped with proper permits, licenses, and all other requirements to effectively perform their job duties
  • monitoring activities in the workplace and ensure nobody is violating safety regulations
  • Conduct and coordinate safety inspections including oversight of maintenance records
  • Lead the investigation of accidents and injuries, and cooperate in the preparation of material for hearings and insurance investigations
  • Oversee the company’s CVOR rating ensuring that it is at an acceptable level through education and enforcement of safety and compliance policies and procedures
  • Oversee the maintenance of the fuel card programs and IFTA reporting
  • Manage and monitor onboarding and off-boarding of employees and equipment
  • Oversee Geotab system
  • Oversee BVD and Petro account.
  • Develop and maintain thorough and current knowledge of all applicable regulations and legislation.
  • Ensure full compliance of all drivers to all organizational policies and procedures as well as governing rules and regulations.
  • Oversee and monitor the fleet, ensuring that preventative maintenance is performed and completed in compliance with company policy and CVOR.
  • Provide training coordination for drivers.
  • Assist and attend scheduled court appointments to address and settle CVOR issues, infractions, points, fines and other related issues.
  • Administer disciplinary measures as required.
  • Monitor and report on all compliance issues and results.
  • Develop, revise, and implement policies and procedures to prevent illegal, unethical or improper conduct of drivers.
  • Provide guidance and leadership on compliance issues.
  • Identify areas of potential compliance vulnerability.
  • Update and maintain the Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration.
  • Conduct audits and compile reports as necessary.
  • Ensure the company is compliant with MOL health & safety requirements
  • Investigate and document damages (both cargo and equipment), resolving claims in a timely fashion, whether through insurance or direct communication with the customer.
  • Plating of trucks in different province such as Ontario, Alberta and Quebec.
  • Other duties shall be assigned as required.

Requirements

  • Full knowledge of MTO/DOT rules and regulations
