About the Role Director, Practice Groups SMEs The Director, Practice Groups SMEs is a senior operating, technical, and commercial leader responsible for supporting and enabling Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across multiple environmental and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) practice groups within a national consulting platform. This role focuses on aligning technical excellence, operational consistency, and growth execution across Practice Groups and offices. The Director partners closely with the COO, Local Directors, Business Development, and Practice Group SMEs to strengthen service delivery, expand EHS offerings, and support entry into new U.S. end markets. The ideal candidate brings deep technical credibility, strong cross-functional leadership, and the ability to influence outcomes in a matrixed organization without direct line authority. Key Responsibilities 1. Practice Groups SME Leadership & Performance Support Support Practice Group SME performance across revenue contribution, utilization, backlog, margin awareness, and technical execution. Partner with SMEs and Local Directors to support development and execution of annual operating and growth plans for each Practice Group. Facilitate regular Practice Group performance reviews, helping SMEs identify risks, opportunities, and improvement actions. Support alignment of Practice Group priorities with enterprise objectives and regional execution plans. Partner with Finance and Operations to improve visibility into Practice Group–level performance and project economics. 2. Growth Strategy & Market Expansion Enablement Support Practice Group SMEs in developing and executing service-line growth strategies, including expansion of EHS offerings and entry into new end markets. Collaborate with Business Development and SMEs to: Support account strategy development and pursuit prioritization Provide technical input on complex proposals, pricing strategies, and risk review Strengthen proposal quality and win rates for multi-office or technically complex pursuits Assist in identifying emerging regulatory, industry, and client trends to inform new service development. 3. Operational Excellence & Technical Consistency Support standardization of technical methods, workflows, tools, and QA/QC processes across Practice Groups. Advise SMEs and Local Directors on resource planning, shared expertise models, and utilization optimization. Facilitate continuous improvement initiatives focused on: Technical quality and consistency Project execution effectiveness Risk management and compliance Support adherence to environmental, EHS, and certification requirements across all Practice Groups and geographies. 4. SME Development & Talent Enablement Mentor and develop Practice Group SMEs, emerging technical leaders, and senior project managers. Support SMEs in defining clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations within the matrix organization. Partner with HR and leadership to support: Succession planning for critical technical roles Training, certification, and professional development pathways Knowledge-sharing and technical community building across Practice Groups Foster a collaborative, high-performance technical culture grounded in safety, integrity, and accountability. 5. Technical Leadership & Client Engagement Serve as a senior technical resource across asbestos, lead, mold, and broader environmental/EHS disciplines. Maintain targeted billable utilization (typically 40–50%) through: Complex or high-risk project support Expert consultation and peer review Strategic client advisory engagements Support SMEs in advancing technical excellence through standardized training, documentation, and best practices. Assist in the development and launch of new service lines while maintaining technical rigor and regulatory compliance. Qualifications & Experience Required 10+ years of progressive experience in environmental consulting, EHS, or related professional services. Demonstrated success supporting multiple technical practice groups or SMEs within a matrixed organization. Strong technical knowledge of asbestos, lead, mold, and environmental compliance services. Proven ability to influence performance, consistency, and growth without direct P&L or line authority. Exceptional communication, facilitation, and stakeholder-management skills. Preferred Experience supporting the expansion of EHS advisory services and entry into new U.S. end markets. Background in private-equity-backed or growth-oriented consulting platforms. Advanced knowledge of federal and state environmental and EHS regulations. Professional certifications (CIH, CSP, CHMM, PE, or similar) preferred. Qualifications Physical & Work Requirements: Physical ability to stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, walk, and stand for extended periods in varied work environments to perform sampling activities. Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer for documentation and reporting. Must be able to pass a background check, annual physicals, and OSHA-required respirator fit tests.
