This role is with the AI+ Research & Commercialization (ARC) team reporting to the Head of Responsible AI (RAI) Innovation & Governance. A dynamic opportunity for those interested in working at the intersection of AI, governance, and responsible innovation, this role requires exceptional leadership, collaboration and teaming skills, and a commitment to curiosity and continuous learning to evolve BMO’s RAI program and practices. At BMO, we recognize the criticality of interdisciplinarity to enabling a robust approach to responsible AI. As such, we encourage applicants from varied backgrounds (e.g., touching on social science, the philosophy and ethics of AI and data, data science, AI strategy, and AI risk) provided they can evidence the key skills and behaviors listed.

KEY SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required; advanced degree (e.g., Masters, PhD) related to responsible AI / responsible innovation preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in technology strategy and/or governance, with a defined specialization in responsible AI / responsible innovation for at least 3 years.
  • Deep knowledge of financial services and the rigor required to innovate and govern in a highly-regulated sector.
  • Exceptional understanding of AI/ML concepts, use cases, the AI development lifecycle, and relevant risk and technology gates associated with AI governance.
  • Advanced knowledge in RAI across ethics, strategy, governance, and program implementation dimensions, with prior experience applying this expertise in a financial services context preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge regarding AI risks, controls, and relevant frameworks, including experience managing the more technical dimensions of RAI, such as explainability, fairness, testing, and ongoing performance monitoring.

Responsibilities

Responsible AI Vision, Roadmap, and Execution

  • Contributes to the development and evolution of RAI practices and related roadmaps to support governance activities and compliance with appropriate regulations, as well as internal policies and standards.
  • Proactively understands gaps in regulatory expectations against AI program in collaboration with risk partners and recommends relevant mitigations.
  • Confirms that RAI considerations are appropriately embedded in relevant products and capabilities in line with risk directives.
  • Identifies / develops and shares patterns, artefacts and frameworks to standardize the operationalization of RAI across the enterprise.

AI Governance Agility

  • Promotes a ‘voice of the practitioner’ perspective in the development of governance program direction in collaboration with Risk and Groups/Services partners.
  • Identifies and executes on opportunities to heighten AI governance agility through process improvements and/or technology enablement initiatives in line with regulatory expectations and ecosystem good practices.

Stakeholder & Ecosystem Engagement

  • Partners with Groups/Services and their teams to drive innovation and mature RAI practices in line with RAI principles.
  • Contributes to AI forums and committees to discuss and drive the continuous improvement of AI governance at BMO, as well as prioritize and resolve AI-related issues.
  • Champions AI literacy and irrigates a RAI culture across BMO by contributing to enterprise awareness and education initiatives.
  • Works with ecosystem partners in the RAI community to advance the development of relevant practices, artefacts, research, and thought leadership.
  • Remains current and ahead of industry trends on RAI and AI governance across ethical and technical dimensions and implements best practices as appropriate.
