SUMMARY  The Director of Scientific Publications is responsible for providing leadership and expertise in all areas of digital and print scientific publishing, focusing on The Journal of Neuroscience and eNeuro. This person plays a key role in exploring such emerging issues as open access and open science, data sharing, and the convergence of publishing of scholarly information in online journals, databases, and Web resources.   The director oversees editorial and production operations related to the weekly production of JNeurosci and continuous publication of eNeuro, ensuring efficient and smooth operations that serve the needs of the Editor-in-Chief, editorial board, and authors. The director will facilitate the work of the Scientific Publications Committee in its work of advising and guiding the Society’s publishing efforts. Additionally, the director will work to ensure effective communications with SfN members and prospective authors and to monitor trends and opportunities that allow SfN to maintain its forward-looking role in scholarly scientific journal publishing.  ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.  * Responsible for managing all departmental operations, including personnel and budgets, liaising with volunteer committees, preparing departmental and committee reports, briefing the Executive Director and senior staff, as needed. * Develops, implements, and monitors strategic departmental initiatives to meet Council objectives, goals, and policies, in alignment with SfN Strategic Plan, collaborating with staff in other departments of the organization as necessary. * Develops the annual budget for the products and activities of the Scientific Publications department, including JNeurosci, eNeuro, History of Neuroscience books, and committee meetings and other SfN-sponsored meetings. Monitors, tracks, and forecasts revenue and expenses to make sure that budget targets are being met, evaluating opportunities to change course as needed.  * Assesses established editorial, production, and publication workflows for efficiency, and adapts them as needed to maximize staff and volunteer time and to ensure an efficient and effective publishing operation. * Works closely with Peer Review Manager to evaluate Editor-in-Chief’s requests and recommendations for both journals, provide recommendations as appropriate, and ensure timely execution; trouble-shoot and resolve problems as needed. * Works closely with Subscriptions and Licensing Specialist to optimize sales of The Journal of Neuroscience subscriptions and licenses, project and track revenue and expenses, research strategies for improving revenue, evaluate all aspects of the journals’ performance, and develop alternative business models in anticipation of industry trends toward open access publication. * Manages Scientific Publications staff (department of ~10), hires and directly supervises Senior Manager, Publication Strategy & Engagement; Peer Review Manager; Production Manager; and Subscription and Licensing Specialist. Participates in or leads special projects as required. Regularly evaluates quality of department’s work to ensure that it consistently meets SfN standards of excellence. * Works with Senior Manager, Publication Strategy and Engagement to provide liaison support to Scientific Publications Committee and other publishing-related committees and volunteer groups that may be formed in the future. * Cultivates relationships among staff and across departments to execute projects collaboratively and effectively * Develops and maintains relationships with individuals within the publishing industry to stay abreast of emerging trends and opportunities and represent SfN as appropriate at major publishing conferences and meetings of professional groups, national and international organizations, and federal government and state agencies where relevant. * Ensures that all departmental events at the SfN annual meeting are well prepared, carefully overseen, and smoothly run. * Leverages business intelligence and reporting tools to provide key reports and statistics as needed/requested  SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  * Manages a department of two or more people by hiring and developing talent, delegating effectively, communicating expectations clearly, and providing professional development opportunities.  MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: * Bachelor’s degree required * 5+ years of relevant experience  * 3+ years of supervisory experience * Substantial experience in scholarly journal publishing  * Experience in managing an editorial or publishing operation * Experience in systems project management, including management of outside vendors * Experience managing budgets  Qualifications: * Demonstrated skills in evaluating, selecting, and managing outside expert resources * Ability to work collaboratively across departments and as part of a management team * Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to assess risk and prioritize follow-up and execution * Demonstrated good judgment and team leadership with strong interpersonal and teamwork skills * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Exceptional time and project management skills * Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner  Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  * Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals.  * Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  * Ability to speak effectively before groups of members or employees.       * Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral, or diagram form. * Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. * Proficiency in MS Office Suite and the ability to learn new software quickly.  Location: * Remote & DMV Required - Employee must be based in the DMV area for reasons related to this position but may not need to regularly come into the office. Employees can work remotely in the DMV area as part of a 35-hour workweek with core hours from 10am–3pm Eastern time.
