Description

The Director of Security & Safety directs and oversees the security, safety, and Security Team Operations for NMAAM to provide a safe and secure environment. The Director of Security & Safety is responsible for the effective functioning of the museum using the best business practices to manage resources, services, and processes to meet the needs of the company.
NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or one of ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security) International Certificates - Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Physical Security Professional (PSP), or Associate Protection Professional (APP) and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience managing guest relations, professional staff, and operations within a hospitality or highly customer/guest-centric environment.
  • Three to five years or more of direct experience in safety and security management in a non-profit organization.
  • Public, private, or military law enforcement or supervisory security experience
  • Must be certified in Tennessee with PPSL (Private Protective Services License) and maintain licensure.
  • Must be able to obtain armed guard registration.
  • CPR/AED Certification is preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of First Aid.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Familiarity with the operation of building auxiliary systems, i.e., fire-life safety, and standby emergency generators.
  • Ability to accurately report findings.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, direct, or coordinate security activities to safeguard company assets, employees, guests, or others on company property.
  • Check and monitor the access control of museum visitors, business visitors and museum staff.
  • Maintain Proprietary Security Organization and Security Team licenses.
  • Supervise and direct activities of Security Officers including assignments and review of work, assignment of work schedules and alternate work schedules.
  • Work closely with Information Technology (IT) Team to maintain CCTV, video, Camera system and its use.
  • Provide training for all inexperienced staff and provide updates to training on a regular basis.
  • Respond to museum emergencies and alarms.
  • Liaison with third party security companies, Homeland Security, and local Law Enforcement and Fire Protection agencies.
  • Develop and/or implement security standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Communicate security status, updates, and actual or potential problems using established protocols.
  • Conduct investigations and prepare incident reports, as necessary.
  • Conduct Emergency Action Plan implementation and bi-annual NMAAM Staff training.
  • Assist in budget preparation for security operations and monitors expenses.
  • Work flexible hours, holidays, weekends, and overtime as required; ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards and industry codes.
  • Obtain quotes and tenders from vendors and suppliers. Calculate and compare costs for goods and services to maximize cost-effectiveness. Negotiate contracts to optimize delivery and cost saving. Coordinate and monitor activities of contract suppliers. Manage contractor and vendor relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
