JOB SUMMARY

The Director-University of Michigan Golf Courses is responsible for oversight, vision and direction for both University of Michigan Golf Courses (Radrick Farms and UM Blue Course). This position ensures that each course is self-sustaining and is meeting the high standards set for golf operations, course maintenance, customer service, food and beverage, budgeting and human resources. They also ensure that the UM Varsity Golf Teams needs are met with respect to their use of the courses and the Weisfeld Family Golf Center.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Degree in golf course management, business administration, hotel and restaurant management, or related field.
  • Minimum eight years of experience in a service-oriented, hospitality industry, such as golf course management, hotel, resort, restaurant, retail or sports management.
  • Knowledge of accounting and financial management principles including uniform system of accounts, financial analysis, budgeting, cash flow forecasting, compensation and benefit administration, financing capital projects, audits, internal revenue service, computers, business office organization and long-range financial planning.
  • Sales and marketing knowledge.
  • Human resource management skills in employee relations, management styles, organizational development, time management, stress management, labor issues and leadership vs. management.
  • Knowledge of building and facilities management in the areas of preventive maintenance, insurance and risk management, clubhouse/building remodeling and renovation, contractors, energy and water resource management, housekeeping, security, laundry and lodging operations.
  • Innovative mind with ideas and know-how to enhance revenue potential with Golf Courses.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective negotiation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage changing demands.
  • Strong experience leading, managing and evaluating performance.
  • Successful experience working in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to lead and team and outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with all team members and customers and promote a team atmosphere.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Sets the vision for University of Michigan Golf Courses in reaching goal of self-sustainability.
  • Research and implement strategies and efficiencies of operating two golf courses on one campus.
  • Supervises General Manager of Radrick Farms, General Manager of the UM Golf Course, and an Accounting Associate by giving direction, setting objectives and measuring success.
  • Guides and assists General Managers in the development of the Golf Courses long and short-range objectives, goals, policies and programs.
  • Maintains positive and productive relationships between both golf courses and its members, guests, teams, and the community.
  • Responsible for guiding the investigation and implementation of revenue opportunities as well as cost control measures.
  • Promotes and develops programs to encourage participation in golf activities at UM Golf Courses.
  • Develops marketing plans for UM Golf Courses and assists with implementation.
  • Oversees and sets vision for environmental stewardship initiatives within the golf courses.
  • Develops, coordinates and administers policies and procedures for both golf courses. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Develops customer service training protocols for clubhouse and grounds staff. Implements processes and procedures for handling staff and customer complaints and grievances.
  • Develops tools to measure success within each area of golf course operations (Clubhouse, Grounds, etc).
  • Sets operating controls and financial objectives and works with ICA business office to develop appropriate reporting tools and reports.
  • Assists with development of golf course budgets and monitors budget throughout year.
  • Provides periodic reports on golf course operations to Chief Operating Officer.
  • Conducts routine staff meetings to communicate vision, delegate tasks and receive input on golf course operations.
  • Serves as liaison with civic organizations to maintain cordial community relations.
  • Develops, maintains and administers strategic long-range and annual organizational and business plans.
  • Assists Chief Operating Officer with identification of Athletics Facility Plan needs related to UM Golf Courses.
  • Serves as a contributing member of the Internal Operations Lead Team.
  • Other duties to be assigned as directed by Chief Operating Officer.
