POSITION SPECIFICS
Penn State is currently seeking a Director, Volunteer Programs to lead the recruitment, engagement, and management of volunteers supporting the Office of University Development’s fundraising efforts. As a member of the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR), you can play an integral role in Penn State’s future and contribute to one of the most successful fundraising and alumni relations operations in the country.
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, External Engagement, Office of University Development, and working closely with DDAR leadership, college volunteer coordinators, as well as other partners, the Director, Volunteer programs will:
- Be responsible for the leadership, strategic direction, and management of the office of Volunteer Programs within the Office of University Development. This includes development and oversight of volunteer recruitment, engagement, in-person and virtual training and education, and recognition practices.
- Articulate Penn State’s needs, ambitions, and values through excellent informal and formal communications.
- Responsible for administering and staffing up to three central campaign committees.
- The director creates and coordinates communications, meetings and events of University-wide volunteers and is responsible for the creation and maintenance of central websites and virtual platforms serving the volunteer audience.
The position plays a key role in creating meaningful partnerships with university leadership, DDAR executives, and unit fundraising leaders to ensure strong management processes and systems are in place to effectively engage volunteers at all levels.
- Facilitate the development and implementation of all aspects of central volunteer committees
- Engage in marketing and communications efforts related to OUD’s volunteer program; may include writing for print and on-line publications
- Participate in the strategic and long-range planning for new initiatives and programs designed to enhance volunteer activities for OUD
- Provide professional guidance and leadership to volunteers and other staff in order to develop and execute strategies and programs
- Work collaboratively with partners to maximize volunteer program success for the University
- Work to engage University partners and community in volunteer activities
- Plan and coordinate the nomination and selection process for various annual development volunteer awards
- Initiate, plan, and manage college programs and special events both on and off campus for central development.
- Will hire, supervise, train, and direct the work of assigned staff
The successful candidate will have:
- At least five years direct experience in working with fundraising volunteers and managing a volunteer program within higher education;
- At least 1-2 years of supervising professional level staff;
- Demonstrated success in developing volunteer recruitment and training programs;
- Experience working with senior organizational leaders and communicating on their behalf;
- A dedication to and understanding of the skills required to build relationships with various communities;
- Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills;
- The ability to create and maintain an inclusive and respectful environment for all students and colleagues;
- A proven ability to self-motivate and work both independently and as part of a team;
- A commitment to professional development, learning, and being mentored.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree
6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted
