About the role

A Disabilities Services Officer assesses clients' needs and plans, develops and implements educational, training and support programs. The role involves working with people with disabilities, their families, and community organisations to provide comprehensive support and facilitate integration into employment and community life.

Key responsibilities

  • Assess clients' needs and the nature and extent of difficulties through interviews and evaluations
  • Plan, develop and implement educational, training and support programmes
  • Monitor and report on the progress of clients
  • Refer clients to agencies that can provide additional help
  • Assess community need and resources for health, welfare, housing, employment, training and other facilities and services
  • Liaise with community groups, welfare agencies, government bodies and private businesses about community issues and promote awareness of community resources and services
  • Support families and provide education and care for children and disabled persons in adult service units, group housing and government institutions
  • Prepare submissions for funding and resources, and reports to government bodies and other agencies
  • Determine the needs of people with disability, including needs that may be met through training or work experience
  • Liaise with employers and employment agencies to place clients in jobs and provide intensive on-the-job training and continuing monitoring in competitive or integrated supported employment programs
