TITLE: Dispatcher DEPARTMENT: University Police REPORTS TO: Communications Supervisor CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD STANDARD WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time  EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt   JOB SUMMARY:  Under direct supervision, answers incoming calls, dispatches officers, and monitors police radio alarms. Operates National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer.  May perform clerical duties as assigned.     ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Receives telephone calls concerning crimes, emergencies, and other requests for police assistance. * Monitors fire and burglar alarms and alarm systems for all university buildings. * Broadcasts orders to patrol officers in the vicinity to investigate complaints or request when appropriate; relays instructions or questions from remote units. * Operates the NCIC computer to run checks on vehicles and/or persons. * Records call broadcasts and complaints received; performs data entry on the computer. * Relays radio and telephone messages between police officers and the community. * Performs receptionist duties; responds to questions from walk-ins and telephone traffic. * Performs various clerical duties including completing the daily log and filing police reports. * Will perform administrative duties as assigned; which may include work in Microsoft Suite and Banner.    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  * Knowledge of telephone consoles and related equipment. * Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations. * Records maintenance skills. * Skill in the use of computers for technical and communication applications. * Word processing and/or data entry skills. * Receptionist skills. * Knowledge of fire and burglar alarm systems reporting. * Clerical, word processing, and/or office skills. * Knowledge of radio dispatch regulations, procedures, protocols, and/or equipment. * Ability to answer the telephone and take messages.     SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: * This position does not have supervisory responsibility.        OTHER DUTIES: * Perform other duties as assigned.   QUALIFICATIONS:  * High school diploma or GED; no previous work experience required of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.     Licensing and Certifications: NA     WORKING CONDITIONS: * Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. * No or very limited physical effort is required. * No or very limited exposure to physical risk.       Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.
