District Controller – Southwest Ontario
Location: 15 Buchanan Court, London, Ontario
Position Type: Permanent Full-Time
Reporting To: V.P. of Finance
Start Date: TBD
Hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week – Overtime as required. Start and end time up for discussion.
Compensation: $100,000 - $120,000 per annum

SUMMARY:

The District Controller is a seasoned financial expert who will work closely with the District Managers, corporate accounting team, and local administration to implement procedures that support the financial needs and goals of the business. Specifically, the District Controller will work to understand the various segments of the business to help managers understand their costs, revenue, and work to improve the profitability of the operation(s). By building tools to provide understandable data and using effective communication to guide managers, the District Controller will be an integral part of our leadership team in Southwest Ontario. This role requires the successful candidate to become a truly integral member of the management team and working to be a trusted partner for leaders in the business.

COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum three (3) years of related and/or leadership experience. Previous experience within the waste industry is an asset.
  • Superior judgment in accounting, governance, and related operational issues (GAAP).
  • Post-Secondary Education in Accounting or Finance - CPA or CPA candidate preferred.
  • Proficient in financial accounting software, SAGE, TRUX and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with multiple priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude even in adverse situations.
  • Strong analytical, organization, planning and execution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills along with written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous M&A experience an asset.
  • Be willing to travel to other operations within the scope of this position.
  • Must have use of a reliable vehicle and have appropriate insurance coverage. Mileage reimbursement will be provided for company use of the personal vehicle.
    Posting closing date: This posting will remain active until it has been filled.
    While the main work location for this role is at our London office, there will be a need to regular travel to other sites. As new contracts are awarded, the scope of these locations will change and grow. These site visits are essential to build relationships with our managers and staff but are flexible and this travel can be arranged in a manner that reflects your life-work balance. Mileage is paid on the use of your personal vehicle and accommodations are booked by our corporate purchasing group. Other reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
    This is an in-office role, but occasional remote work is acceptable when approved.

Responsibilities
  • Ownership of all aspects of local divisional accounting, including full P&L preparation and presentation to management.
  • Ensure deadlines are met to provide the information required for month and year end procedures.
  • Work and collaborate with DMs to prepare annual budgets for each line of business, including financial projections and targets. Projections must be kept up to date and adjusted where appropriate.
  • Prepare monthly reporting for financial reviews.
  • Analyze monthly entries and prepare journal entries to complete month end in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Analyze monthly results comparing to budgets and forecasts and work with DMs to review to senior management.
  • Become a business partner with other local managers to provide support and analysis of financial statements.
  • Work with local sales and customer service staff on pricing strategies and issues.
  • Prepare KPI’s and assist management with the analysis and recommend corrective actions.
  • Work with the operations team to develop profitability analysis tools to ensure sound business practices.
  • Work with local management to analyze labour trends, maintenance costs and other business issues – become a trusted partner to truly add value to the business.
  • Be the local expert on the company’s systems, including TRUX, Dossier, Ceridian, YOOZ, Nexonia, Solver, and SAGE.
  • Work with the corporate team and field staff on various automation projects and implementation.
  • Merger & acquisition preparation work along with implementation assistance as required.
  • Assist with the administration and flow of data that is needed to report information to our municipal and other government partners.
  • Lead other relevant projects as assigned and required.
