MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Information Technology Strategy: Demonstrated experience collaborating with IT leadership and business customers to deliver effective solutions for a large, diverse organization. This includes setting organizational objectives, interpreting company policies, defining operational goals, and empowering teams to execute successfully.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience managing cross-functional IT teams, including high-level managers and technical professionals, within a large IT organization. Proven track record of leading organizational change through strategic planning and tactical operations. Experience developing IT service strategies, managing the division’s fiscal budget, and consulting with senior leadership and stakeholders to identify technology needs. Ability to define a long-term IT strategy and communicate it effectively. Experience building high-performing teams and mentoring IT leaders.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Experience collaborating with sister IT and functional customer organizations, fostering strong relationships, and effectively communicating complex information to diverse stakeholders. Demonstrated adaptability, influence, and the ability to motivate others while navigating sensitive situations without compromising relationships. Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills are essential, along with the ability to prioritize and engage effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration Skills: Experience working across departments (finance, HR, operations) to ensure IT alignment.
  • Business Management, Problem Solving and Development: Demonstrated strong business management and development skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and setting performance standards for an organization. Adept at using data to drive change, measure progress, and demonstrate success. Experience working within or alongside an IT organization to deliver innovative business solutions is essential.
  • Crisis Management & Incident Response: Experience handling major IT incidents and ensuring business continuity.
  • Process Optimization & Automation: Experience leveraging automation and AI to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Decision-Making & Risk Assessment: Experience balancing risk, innovation, and operational stability.
  • Institutional Acumen: Demonstrated experience in fostering strong working relationships with senior and executive management and both internal and external customers to drive the successful execution of IT initiatives. Must possess a deep understanding of the Laboratory’s mission and operations to effectively align technology solutions with institutional needs. Proven ability to collaborate with stakeholders and peer organizations to ensure alignment between institutional priorities, policies, and resource allocation. Strong communication skills, including the ability to present complex IT concepts to non-technical stakeholders, are essential
    Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field from an accredited institution and 15 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Organizational Modernization and Optimization: Ability to align IT infrastructure with business goals and drive digital transformation. Ability to drive the transformation of our hybrid IT infrastructure, integrating on-premises data centers with cloud-based solutions to ensure redundancy, scalability, and security on both the unclassified and classified networks. This role will lead the maturation of optimizing data center operations
  • IT Infrastructure & Architecture: Understanding of networks, cloud computing, data centers, cybersecurity, and enterprise architecture.
  • Cybersecurity & Risk Management: Knowledge of security frameworks (NIST, ISO), threat mitigation, and compliance.
  • IT Operations & Service Management: Experience with ITIL, incident management, and disaster recovery.
  • Enterprise Systems & Emerging Technologies: Familiarity with automation, AI/ML, DevOps, and IoT trends in IT infrastructure.
  • Classified Computing: Familiarity with LANL’s classified network infrastructure, classified stakeholders, classified equipment.
  • Federal/DOE: Previous experience managing an IT organization in the Federal sector and/or DOE/NNSA nuclear complex and/or knowledge of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) structural organization, business functions, history, and culture.
  • Clearance: Active DOE “Q” or other Top-Secret clearance.
Responsibilities

Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an outstanding Information Technology leader to advance the services we provide to our customers and ensure this is a great place to work for our employees.
The Division Leader (DL) oversees ISD’s strategic direction, IT initiatives, and group leadership while fostering customer and cross-organizational relationships. They promote a strong culture of safety, security, and ethics and handle additional duties as assigned. Reporting directly to the CIO, the DL supports the CIO’s vision and leads the execution of ISD operations as a key member of the IT leadership team.
The ISD Division comprises over 320 IT professionals, including solution architects, software developers, network specialists, and telecommunications experts. They support LANL’s mission by designing, building, and maintaining IT services across classified and unclassified networks. ISD ensures seamless IT operations through performance monitoring, configuration management, and standardized implementation. As an operations-driven organization, it maintains 24/7 availability of LANL’s telecommunications and data networks to support mission-critical tasks.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Leadership: Developing and executing the division’s vision, strategic plans, and goals.
  • Service Delivery Oversight: Ensuring high-performance service delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Collaboration & Alignment: Partnering with federal oversight, the CIO’s office, stakeholders, and internal teams to align institutional priorities with resource allocation.
  • Organizational Management: Leading financial stewardship (budgeting, forecasting, and financial management), staff development, succession planning, personnel management, and maintaining a secure workplace.
  • Cybersecurity Leadership: Acting as the Information Systems Owner (ISO) for LANL Enterprise Major Applications (LEMA), overseeing cybersecurity programs, and leading LEMA ISSOs.
  • Policy & Strategic Decision-Making: Applying technical and management expertise to influence policy, make strategic decisions, and manage large-scale resource deployment.
