POSITION OVERVIEW

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a well-qualified tradesman to serve as a Stationary Engineer. This position will operate, administer, and maintain the total operation of the facility’s powerhouse by observing and reading gauges and meters, maintains appropriate logbooks, and preparing schedules powerplant staff. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years of elementary school.
  • Requires four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefers a current City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience operating high-pressure steam boiler/s at or above 20,000 pounds of steam per hour.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining steam plant auxiliaries.
  • Prefers at least four (4) years of experience operating and maintaining ion exchange resin water softening equipment.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of field experience in the programming and function of variable frequency drives.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. Shifts are assigned according to seniority. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour “on call’ capacity.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
