The Doctoral Programme in Engineering Sciences within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences has strong industrial relevance. Graduates have the ability to refine industrial challenges into scientific research questions and apply scientific methods to create new knowledge. They will have the expertise to pursue challenging careers in the field of engineering sciences. The programme is closely focused on technology covering the following research fields: Automation Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering as well as Mechanical and Production Engineering.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We have 5 fully funded doctoral researcher (postgraduate student) positions open to candidates willing to carry out a research project towards a doctoral degree (Dr. Sc. (Tech) / PhD). Most of the positions are to be funded for three years. Shorter periods can also be considered. The doctoral researchers are supposed to carry out research in one of our research groups in the research fields of Automation Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Production Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering. More information of the research fields and relevant research groups can be found here:

  • Automation technology and mechanical engineering
  • Engineering materials science

REQUIREMENTS

A necessary requirement is a M.Sc. degree in a relevant field (related to automation science and engineering, materials science and engineering, or mechanical and production engineering).
Other necessary requirements are motivation letter and a preliminary research plan (see below) signed by the applicant and the responsible supervisor. Thus, the candidate needs to find a committed supervisor from Tampere University before submitting the application. More information of the responsible supervisors, including their research interests, can be found in the following website: Responsible supervisors in the Doctoral Programme in engineering sciences .
The candidates are selected based on the researcher potential demonstrated through the previous studies and merits in research work and thesis writing. In particular, the relevant indicators, in the order of importance, that we examine at the first stage are (1) Grade of M.Sc. thesis, (2) GPA of M.Sc. and B.Sc. studies, (3) preliminary research plan, signed by applicant and responsible supervisor, (4) motivation letter, (5) potential scientific publications and other academic merits listed in the CV, considering the career stage of the applicant. Please see below for the necessary documents attached to the application. Good oral and written communication skills and cooperation abilities are necessary factors in the selection procedure.
Please note that along commencing in the position, the selected candidates must also apply for a study right within the doctoral programme, unless they already have one. The selected candidates will be informed about this separate procedure later in 2025.

Responsibilities
  • A motivation letter (max 1 page).
  • A preliminary research plan (max 2 pages). The letter must be signed by the applicant and responsible supervisor.
  • Curriculum vitae according to the TENK template, including a potential list of publication(s).
