The ISPCA Dog Warden Service is seeking an enthusiastic Dog Warden to expand their team in Kildare.
The Role:
- Full-time, permanent.
- €30,000-€35,000 D.O.E.
- Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm

Due to the nature of our work, we require that the applicant has:
- Excellent animal handling experience particularly with canines.
- A basic level of education to include written and spoken English.
- A keen interest in animal welfare.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- The ability to work efficiently under pressure, as part of a team and on their own initiative.
- Resilience and the ability to cope with potentially distressing and emotional situations.
- A full clean driving licence.
The following skills would be an advantage:
- Awareness of the Control of Dogs Act 1986, as amended and the Dog Breeding Establishment’s Act 2010.
- Experience caring for and rehabilitating sick, injured and traumatised animals.
- Experience with disease control.
- Experience with preparation of reports or evidence for court.
Who We Are and What We Do:
Located in Timolin, Co. Kildare, the Kildare Dog Pound houses up to 15 dogs. You will be joining our current team of two dog wardens to patrol and service the county.
Our aim is to educate the public and enforce the Control of Dogs Act 1986, as amended and the Dog Breeding Establishment’s Act 2010.
Due to the nature of our work, we also have a 24 hour a day Employee Assistance Programme available to all employees. This service is confidential and is completely free for our employees.
Some of the main duties and responsibilities of this role would include:
- The Dog Warden shall perform such duties as may be assigned to them from time to time by the ISPCA DWS Manager, CEO or Board.
- They shall give priority at all times to the welfare of the dogs in their care.
- They shall work in close liaison with the Garda Siochana and the local authority and shall co-operate with such other organisation(s) as required. For this reason they shall take all reasonable steps to ensure that they can be contacted by the above, when required through the agreed procedures.
- Enforce the Control of Dogs Act 1986, as amended and the Dog Breeding Establishment’s Act 2010.
- The Dog Warden is expected at all times to maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to their duties.
- The Dog Warden is required to participate in ongoing training including health and safety.
- Patrol, in a vehicle provided, the streets and areas of country as required to investigate complaints and maintain a watch for stray or uncontrolled dogs or for other infringements of the Control of Dogs Act 1986.
- Take all reasonable steps to trace and identify the owners or keepers of stray dogs or uncontrolled dogs and where possible, to return such dogs to their owners.
- Request as necessary any person appearing to be the owner or keeper of a dog to produce a relevant dog licence.
- Seize and take to the dog pound stray dogs and dogs detained by other persons where the owners are not available or cannot be traced after reasonable enquiries have been made.
- Inform the owner and keepers of dogs of the relevant legal requirements relating to dog control, and make them aware of the damage and inconvenience caused to people, livestock and property by stray or uncontrolled dogs, and of the value of having dogs properly trained and controlled.
- Subject to the direction of the ISPCA DWS Manager, CEO or board, issue publicity on the welfare of dogs, assist with rehoming, update of websites and the implementation of relevant educational programs.
- To ensure high standards of animal welfare, care and hygiene with special attention to the welfare of sick, nervous and pregnant bitches. Also, to ensure the highest possible standards of disease control are implemented and isolation of suspect or sick dogs.
- Prepare any necessary reports or evidence and attend court and give evidence as required.
- Issue notices where necessary as specified in the Control of Dogs Act 1986.
- Ensure that all dogs in their area of responsibility are licensed annually where licenses are applicable.
- Maintain a register of all dogs as prescribed in the Control of Dogs Act 1986 and all other records and paperwork as required.
- Submit detailed reports to the DWS Manager or other person designated by the ISPCA CEO/Board, setting out details of:
- Numbers of dogs impounded, surrendered, euthanised, rehomed, reclaimed or conveyed into the care of an organisation. To be submitted on a monthly basis.
- Number of fixed penalty notices issued and working hours spent on licence checks. To be submitted by individual Dog Wardens on a weekly basis.
- Hours of work and vehicle mileage details. To be submitted by individual Dog Wardens on a weekly basis.
- Petty cash expenditure including receipts. To be submitted on a monthly basis.
- Deal with any monies received on behalf of the ISPCA, as directed by the Finance Section, ISPCA Head Office.
- Maintain the vehicle provided in a clean and sanitary condition with due regard at all times to the comfort and welfare of dogs held in it.
- Co-operate with a person or person(s) representing the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) or other organisation(s) to facilitate the homing of dogs deemed suitable by the Dog Warden which have not been claimed within the statutory period, such organisations to be designated by the ISPCA CEO/board and such persons to be nominated by them.
- Scan for micro-chips on all seized or stray dogs admitted into the Dog Pound on the proviso that the procedure can be carried out safely, in an attempt along with other measures to reunite them with their owners.
- The microchipping of all dogs prior to being responsibly rehomed ensuring the micro-chip records are updated on the government approved microchipping database. The decision as to whether or not it is safe to scan/microchip a dog is at the discretion of the Dog Warden concerned.
If / when the Dog warden is also the Pound Keeper, they shall in addition to the
above:
- Permit the DWS Manager, CEO, Board, ISPCA staff member or Veterinary Officer as may be designated from time to time to inspect the Pound at any reasonable time having first informed the Dog Warden and the responsible Veterinary Officer if available.
- Assist a Veterinary Surgeon in the humane destruction of dogs ensuring, as far as possible, that dogs are not destroyed by any means other than injection.
- Dispose of carcasses where necessary.
- Maintain the kennels in a clean and sanitary condition with due regard at all times to the comfort and welfare of dogs held in them.
- Facilitate in all reasonable ways members of the public wishing to give dogs into the custody of the Pound, seek lost or seized dogs or give homes to unclaimed or unwanted dogs.
Cover outside normal working hours
- If contactable, the Dog Warden shall be available, outside normal working hours to deal with emergencies notified to them by the Gardai or the Local Authority and shall take all reasonable steps, including notification of their address and telephone number to each Garda Superintendent in their area, to be contactable by the Garda Siochana or local authority when required.
- In addition, they shall, on Saturday and Bank Holidays except during periods of annual leave, collect or arrange to have collected any dogs in the custody of the Garda Siochana and convey then to the Dog Pound.
Co-operation and Flexibility
- The Dog Warden is required to show co-operation and flexibility in carrying out the operations of the ISPCA (including the provision of cover when other employees in their statutory area are absent) and, subject to prior consultation in implementing ongoing changes.
