This position will fall under the collective agreement between the Community Social Services Bargaining Association of Unions (CSSBA) and Community Social Services Employers’ Association (CSSEA). The position will fall under the conditions of employment as a member of the BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU).
Overview: Kiwassa Neighbourhood House grows a welcoming and inclusive community in the vibrant Hastings-Sunrise and Grandview-Woodland neighbourhoods of East Vancouver, Located on the traditional, unceded and occupied territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səlílw̓ətaʔ/Selilwitulh (TsleilWaututh), and xʷməθkwəyə̓ m (Musqueam) Nations.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Domestic Violence Prevention (DVP) Program is designed to help women access community resources, enhance parenting skills, maintain healthy lifestyles, and develop the confidence needed to make informed decisions while parenting their children. The DVP Worker will work collaboratively with social workers, police, community-based domestic violence programs and service providers, and Kiwassa programs to build a network of support for women and children served. Additionally, the DVP Worker provides support to other service providers, by offering information, consultation, and training.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Knowledge

  • Diploma in relevant human/social science field.

Training and Experience

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in domestic violence and family support work.
  • Reliable vehicle and a valid BC driver’s license with a safe driving record
  • Criminal record check
  • Knowledge of issues and impacts of complex trauma and ongoing long- term effects of abuse on women and children.
  • Knowledge of immigrant and refugee settlement and integration issues.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other community service providers, social workers, and family and criminal courts.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity to the needs of diverse communities.
  • Demonstrated facilitation and experience with delivering presentations
  • Demonstrated intercultural communication skills.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in an additional language is an asset.
Responsibilities
  • To support women in planning and implementing short- and long-term safety strategies for themselves and their children.
  • Create a network of supports for participants impacted by violence by providing information about available community resources and services and making appropriate referrals, such as shelters, counselling services, legal assistance, and support groups.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the Family Programs Team and with other Kiwassa programs and community partners to provide programs and services to participants.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with partner organizations, community resource providers, the Ministry of Children and Families, social workers, and police as required.
  • Deliver presentations and educational workshops for families and community service providers to raise awareness about domestic violence.
  • Advocate for and support best practices in relation to violence in relationships and child protection.
  • Maintain program and participant files, related records and statistics, and write reports as required.
  • Maintain and share up-to-date knowledge of community resources, community needs, and relevant government programs, policies, and legislation.
  • Promote the program through the development and distribution of materials, presentations in the community, and partner relationships.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
