Job Details Job Location: Des Moines, IA 50313 Position Type: Full Time Job Shift: Day Job Summary: Ag Express Electronics is seeking a Drafter II who will be responsible for independently creating accurate technical drawings and models to support the design and production of wire harnesses and related assemblies. This role utilizes CAD software to produce detailed schematics, electrical harness layouts, and manufacturing drawings based on engineering specifications and customer requirements. The Drafter II leads complex projects, works closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure designs are accurate, manufacturable, and meet all applicable standards, and actively improves drafting standards and processes with an emphasis on continuous improvement. This position may be located at any of Ag Express’ three locations: Des Moines, Iowa; Grand Island, Nebraska; Sulphur Springs, Indiana Key Responsibilities: Drafting and Design Independently develop complete production-ready drawing packages. Interpret complex designs and customer specifications with minimal oversight. Lead drawing development for complex harness assemblies. Review and refine drawings created by Drafter I team members. Translate engineering concepts, prints, and sketches into accurate manufacturing documentation. Maintain and update design files and revision histories in accordance with company standards. Technical Collaboration Work closely with engineers, project managers, and production teams to clarify design requirements and resolve issues. Interpret and apply customer specifications, industry standards, and internal guidelines to all drawings. Participate in design reviews to ensure manufacturability and quality compliance. Mentor Drafter I team members and provide technical guidance. Drawing Standards & Compliance Accurately interpret layouts, schematics, and technical drawings. Verify that all designs comply with dimensional, material, and performance requirements. Identify gaps in standards and recommend improvements. Lead the development and maintenance of formal drafting standards and best practices. Manufacturing Support Provide advanced manufacturing guidance and resolve complex build issues. Assist with prototype builds and coordinate changes based on manufacturing feedback. Proactively identify and implement improvement initiatives in product design and drafting processes. Documentation & Data Management Maintain organized records of drawings, revisions, and associated project documentation. Adhere to engineering, change notice controls to ensure drawing accuracy and version integrity. Required Skills and Qualifications: Attention to detail and accuracy in all drawings. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects independently. Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams. Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and problem-solving ability. Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications: Education: Associate’s degree or technical diploma in Drafting, Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred. Certification: CAD certification preferred. Work Experience: 3+ years of drafting experience in a manufacturing, electrical, or mechanical design environment. Experience in wire harness design or related electrical/mechanical assembly preferred. Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Arcadia, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software. Ability to read and interpret prints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications. Advanced understanding of manufacturing processes, DFM principles, and industry drafting standards. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Physical Demands: Manual Dexterity: Ability to manipulate small components, connectors, and wires with precision and accuracy during the assembly and testing of electrical systems. Lifting and Carrying: Occasionally, the role may involve lifting and carrying equipment, tools, or materials weighing up to a certain limit. Standing and Walking: Some tasks may require standing and walking around the facility for limited periods of time, such as collaborating with coworkers and testing certain equipment. Visual Acuity: Good eyesight and visual acuity are important for reading technical diagrams, inspecting electrical components, and identifying small details during the repair and testing process. Sitting for Extended Periods: Much of the work may be conducted at a desk or workstation, requiring the ability to sit for extended periods Repetitive Motion: Some tasks, electronic assembly or testing, may involve repetitive motions of the hands, arms, or fingers. Ergonomic practices should be followed to minimize the risk of repetitive strain injuries.
