JOB DESCRIPTION
Hank’s Feedmill Service Ltd. is a family operated company located in Picture Butte. We service and maintain many local agricultural companies in the Lethbridge area, as well design and erect facilities from start to finish. HFS is currently recruiting a full-time Design Engineer / Lead Draftsman. The successful candidate will preferably have 3-5 years previous experience or a clear desire to learn. Along with the necessary experience, the applicant should have a strong work ethic and a safety-conscious attitude. The wage for this position is negotiable depending on experience levels. This position works closely with Project Managers, Estimators, and Shop and Field Supervisors to ensure that all drawings are accurate, buildable, and support timely, high-quality project execution. In addition to preparing fabrication and installation drawings, the Draftsman / Design Engineer assists with early-stage layouts, material take-offs, and revising designs as project needs evolve. The role also helps maintain internal CAD standards, file organization, and version control to ensure consistency and clarity across all drawing packages.
The ideal candidate is technically skilled, detail-oriented, and confident in both independent work and collaborative coordination. A strong understanding of fabrication processes, mechanical layouts, and 2D/3D drafting principles is essential. This role is well suited for someone who takes initiative, communicates clearly, and enjoys solving complex design challenges in a hands-on, production-focused environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
o Post-secondary education in engineering, drafting, or a related technical field
o Proficient in producing accurate 2D and 3D designs using SolidWorks or equivalent software
o Strong spatial awareness and ability to visualize how designs translate into field and shop builds
o Strong accuracy in in translating ideas into clear, build-ready drawings for fabrication and installation
o Understanding of fabrication methods, material compatibility, and practical build requirements
o Knowledge of shop capabilities and field conditions, with the ability to troubleshoot design limitations and adapt solutions accordingly
o Strong attention to detail in layout, fit, and overall design feasibility
o Ability to anticipate and resolve design issues early in the process
o Clear, professional communication with estimators, project managers, and shop/field crews
o Reliable follow-through on design revisions, approvals, and deadlines
o Organized, methodical approach to drawing packages, documentation, and version tracking
o Comfortable working independently and as part of a fast-paced, hands-on team
o Commitment to meeting client specifications, safety standards, and industry best practices
o Prepare clear and accurate 2D and 3D CAD drawings for fabrication, layout, and installation
o Translate project scopes, client specifications, and verbal instructions into practical, buildable designs
o Collaborate with Estimators, Project Managers, and Shop and Field Supervisors to ensure drawing clarity and build feasibility
o Revise and update drawings in response to project changes, feedback, or construction constraints
o Support project quoting by developing early-stage layout concepts and identifying essential materials to inform estimates
o Ensure that all designs meet client needs, safety requirements, practical build standards, and best practices
o Organize and maintain design files and drawing packages, ensuring consistent standards, version tracking, and clear documentation practices
o Identify and resolve potential in layout or fabrication to reduce rework and project delays
o Support continuous improvement by recommending design updates and workflow adjustments based on feedback from shop and field teams
