As a Driver/Operator/Labourer 1 in the Mobility Labour Pool, you can expect to be assigned on shifts that cover 24 hours per day/7 days per week. This position includes labouring, driving and equipment operating tasks that are assigned daily based on operational needs. The work is physically demanding and requires the incumbent(s) to work in all types of weather conditions on various types of vehicles and machinery to complete the work assigned. Primary duties include:

  • Perform general labour function at job sites including shoveling, raking, fencing, loading and unloading of materials.
  • Drive to and from job sites.
  • Operation of various pieces of equipment (tandem, loaders, sweepers, bobcats, sanders and graders).
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections and keep a daily driving log.
  • Actively participate in all training offered by Mobility Business Unit based on operational requirements.
  • Perform assigned work by the Foreman, Supervisor or District Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
  • A Grade 10 education is required.
  • At least 6 months labouring experience performing physically demanding manual labour is also required.
  • The successful completion of City of Calgary Fleet training for a Class 3 license when operationally required.
  • Completion of an Emergency First Aid Course (organized and funded by The City of Calgary).
  • High School diploma or equivalent (i.e. GED) will be considered an asset.
  • You will have strong communication skills, verbally and written and the ability to understand instructions.
    Working Conditions: These positions require physical demanding work in all types of working and weather conditions, in various locations throughout the City.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
  • Applicants may be contacted, interviewed, and hired throughout the duration of this competition.
    Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
