Island Métis Family & Community Services Society provides a variety of support programs to Métis children and families living in the greater Victoria area. Currently, IMFCSS is accepting employment applications for the following position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Early Childhood Education Certificate, plus Special Needs or Infant Toddler/Under Three Certificate.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices, traditions and contemporary issues affecting Indigenous peoples, preferably Métis and a willingness to learn.
  • In depth knowledge of child development, indicators of child abuse, and procedures to follow when making a child protection report.
  • Excellent organizational, record-keeping and case management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-professional groups, professionals, the general public and Indigenous people.
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize work, and multi-task.
  • Ability to be flexible and adjust to changing work environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Ability to function independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Successful candidate will be subject to a criminal record review, police record check and other reference checks.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year recent directly related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

LOCATION:

  • At the office of Island Métis Family & Community Services Society, at 345 Wale Road, Victoria.
    This position requires union membership. Hourly rate is between $25.95 - $29.76, based on JJEP Grid 10 – Step 1 as governed by the current Indigenous Services Collective Agreement. Normal schedule of work is 35 hours per week, performed Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, may include other hours based on agency need.

Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Indigenous Early Childhood Development Worker provides support and direct care to Métis children under 6, including special needs children or infants/toddlers, and their families or caregivers, in the South Island Region, to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical and emotional growth and reports directly to the IMFCSS Team Leader. The Indigenous Early Childhood Development Worker provides skill building, emotional support and feedback to clients from the IMFCSS office, in the community or directly in familial homes.

  • Maintains related records and statistics and provides reports to IMFCSS Team Leader.
  • Receives referrals from the client, the community, or MCFD, to provide Indigenous Early Childhood Development support services to Métis children in the South Island Region.
  • Attends and participates actively in all agency or other meetings when possible or required.
  • Maintains an accurate weekly log of case activities and reports on IMFCSS database system.
  • Consults with the Team Leader and Executive Director regarding cultural activities and planning.
  • Performs other related duties as required
Responsibilities

Key duties and responsibilities of this position will be carried out in accordance with IMFCSS and MCFD procedures and policies.

  • Plans, carries out and evaluates developmentally appropriate activities and experiences for children using modelling, observing, questioning, demonstrating and reinforcing techniques. Develops daily program schedules that include indoor/outdoor, active/quiet and individual and group activities.
  • Identifies the abilities, interests and needs of children and develops individualized and group curriculum based on these. Recommends referrals or additional services or work in consultation with professionals such as behavioural therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists.
  • Reports on progress, behaviours and other issues related to children. Contributes to reports for children moving on to elementary school. Maintains required records and statistics.
  • Participates in preschool planning and evaluation of programs offered by the organization. Provides recommendations for change to the supervisor.
  • Provides work direction to early childhood educator assistants as required.
  • Attends to the children’s physical needs that may include diapering, toileting, eating and sleeping.
  • Administers first aid and medication in accordance with established policy.
  • Ensures a healthy and safe environment in which the children can interact. Identifies and removes potential hazards.
  • Communicates with families about children’s growth and development. Requests input from and participation of parents in the development of programs. Confers with parents with regard to unusual or problematic issues.
  • Facilitate Métis identity formation, to ground and create belonging for Métis children and families within the larger Métis community. By using the following methodologies:

· Assessing indicators of knowledge
· Researching and teaching Métis history
· Genealogy and lineage research
· Contextualizing common experiences of individuals and families
· Teaching about historic/ current cultural practices
· Teaching the meaning of Métis symbols
· Community gatherings
· Parent and Tot Drop-In Programs
· Arts and crafts
· Brokering linkages to Métis Elders, Storytellers, Cultural Carriers, Mentors, Artists and Intellectuals
