  • 2+ years of experience working in a post-secondary setting in the field of student recruitment and marketing/communications
  • Excellent communication and marketing skills; including superior writing and editing skills for target audiences
  • Proficiency in advanced levels of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and publishing programs and laptop technology
  • Organizational skills and project/event management skills
  • Excellent judgement and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a high volume, target-driven environment; meet deadlines and handle stressful working conditions
  • Excellent customer service skills required
  • Possesses a creative mind
  • Good analytical skills
  • Be a self-starter
  • Demonstrated excellence in public speaking with the ability to create and deliver dynamic presentations
  • Knowledge of emerging communication technologies (i.e.. web development, e-communications, social media)

Responsibilities

Coordination, Planning, Delivery of Outreach Programming – 30%

  • Expand Lakehead’s outreach efforts to focus on younger grades (specifically Grade 8-10) to generate excitement about post-secondary education
  • Provide information about curriculum planning/course selection for high school students
  • Develop interactive and engaging programming both on campus and in schools (local and regional - Northwestern Ontario and Simcoe County) around career outcomes and financial literacy/the cost of post-secondary
  • Increase access to information about university pathways for parents/families at a younger age
  • Develop a local/regional Awareness campaign that highlights the value of a Lakehead education in our two local regions
  • Develop and disseminate informational materials for parents/families that address key piece of information about access, costs, and opportunities at Lakehead University
  • Attend and meet with parents/families at school Parent Nights, Parent Council meetings, etc.
  • Explore further opportunities for parent connections
  • Work with local/regional interest groups and school boards to develop future programming

Development/Delivery of a Financial Literacy Program – 15%

  • In consultation with school partners and Student Awards & Financial Aid, develop and deliver a Financial Literacy Program and Workshop to classrooms to develop skills around financial literacy;
  • Provide information about financial literacy and the cost of post-secondary education;
  • Provide information regarding the value of post-secondary education.

Youth Career Mentorship Conferences – 15%

  • Develop and facilitate 2-4 Youth Career Mentorship Conferences (elementary and secondary schools in both Thunder Bay and Orillia/Barrie);
  • Inspire youth about careers through stories of Lakehead Alumni;
  • Help students understand the value of PSE;
  • Help students set goals for their own future.

Student Mentorship Program – 20%

  • Building off the success of the Aboriginal Mentorship Program, develop a Student Mentorship program to work with at-risk student populations;
  • Engage current Lakehead students with offering mentorship to non-Indigenous youth in high schools.

Access Strategy Development – 20%

  • Explore and identify opportunities to promote access to university; identify barriers (real and perceived) and develop recommendations and plans to improve access
  • Explore the concept of a “Transition to University Pathway” for Gr12 students to take university courses while at high school;
  • Develop the framework for the pilot program, with consultation from local school guidance counsellors;
  • Develop materials and pilot the Pathway program.
