JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Band Administrator, the Economic Development Officer for the Penticton Indian Band plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable economic growth and enhancing opportunities for the community. This position focuses on developing and strengthening partnerships with external entities, identifying new revenue sources, and supporting community members in business development initiatives. The Economic Development Officer is responsible for conducting research on viable economic opportunities, preparing detailed and independent reports, and guiding the development of new proposals that align with the community’s goals. This role involves collaborating with local businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders to attract investments, support entrepreneurial ventures, and drive economic diversification. Key to this position is the ability to assist community members with business planning and navigating resources, as well as exploring innovative ways to generate revenue for the Band. The Economic Development Officer fosters initiatives that align with the Band’s values, promote environmental stewardship, and advance the transition to sustainable, renewable energy solutions. The primary focus for this position is on broad economic development initiatives that align with the long-term vision of the Penticton Indian Band. Through strategic planning, expertise in partnerships and revenue generation, and effective stakeholder engagement, the Economic Development Officer will contribute to a resilient and thriving economy that supports the aspirations of the community.
MINIMUM ACADEMIC/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Sustainable Development or a related field
- A combination of relevant education and substantial work experience in economic development may be considered
MINIMUM LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE
- 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in economic development, business administration, or a related field
- Experience in organizing and leading community consultations and meetings
- Proven track record of successfully managing economic development projects from conception to completion
- Experience in identifying and securing funding opportunities, including grant writing and fundraising
- Experience in setting measurable goals and evaluating progress
- Understanding of policies, regulations, and legislation affecting Indigenous economic development.
- Indigenous Cultural Competency Training
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- · Primarily works in an office setting, with a dedicated workspace for planning, research, and communication tasks.
- · Regular travel within the community and surrounding areas to meet with stakeholders, attend meetings, and conduct site visits.
- · Occasional travel outside the region for conferences, training, or meetings with external partners
- · Frequent interaction with community members, local businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- · Participation in community events, forums, and workshops to gather input and promote economic development initiatives.
- · Works closely with other departments within the Penticton Indian Band, including governance, finance, and land management.
- · Collaborates with external organizations, including regional economic development agencies, businesses, and government bodies.
- · Primarily a sedentary role with prolonged periods of sitting and computer use.
- · Occasional physical activity may be required for site visits, event setup, or community engagement activities.
- · High level of responsibility in driving economic growth and development for the community.

Responsibilities:
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND WORK PERFORMED
- Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with businesses, organizations, and government agencies to support economic development initiatives.
- Monitor and asses the performance of existing Penticton Indian Band businesses and make recommendations to the stakeholders.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to community members on creating and growing their businesses, including assistance with business planning, funding applications, and market analysis.
- Conduct thorough research and feasibility studies to evaluate potential economic opportunities and identify new revenue streams for the Band.
- Compile, analyze, and present independent reports and recommendations on economic development projects to leadership and stakeholders.
- Guide community members and departments in drafting, submitting, and reviewing funding proposals and grant applications.
- Design and deliver workshops, training, or events that encourage entrepreneurial skills and provide resources for community businesses.
- Identify and pursue innovative opportunities to generate sustainable revenue streams for the Band.
- Work closely with local, provincial, and federal agencies to attract funding and investment that align with community values and objectives.
- Stay informed about regional and national economic trends and evaluate their potential impact on the Penticton Indian Band.
- Collaborate with leadership to create policies and frameworks that foster economic growth and community well-being.
- Oversee the implementation of approved economic development projects, ensuring they align with timelines, budgets, and objectives.
- Research available grants and funding opportunities, prepare application packages, and assist in reporting requirements post-award.
- Represent the Band in meetings, conferences, and negotiations to advocate for its economic goals and priorities.
- Integrate green energy opportunities where applicable to support sustainable development, without making it the sole focus.
- Develop and maintain metrics to measure the success of economic initiatives and regularly report progress to leadership.
