Description

Plans, edits, and has overall responsibility for a principal publication. Reads and evaluates material submitted for publication. May develop all or part of the content. Generally, has a law degree or acquired technical expertise. Provides general guidance and editorial direction to the staff. Maintains contacts with government officials and acts as liaison with sales and marketing to assist in advertising efforts. May write editorials and may conduct weekly editorial meetings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned to meet editorial department objectives.
1. Monitors and manages writing editorial assignments, edits special reports, viewpoints, etc., and evaluates articles for publishing that have been submitted by outside authors and correspondents. Plans each issue and coordinates the flow of copy.
2. Communicates with outside authors regarding all stages of manuscript preparation through meetings, phone, and e-mail. Resolves problems and sets schedules.
3. Edits for substance, style, and accuracy, conducts research as needed, and ensures proper citation style, according to established policies and procedures.
4. Tracks major tax-related issues and individuals to ensure coverage in print and online.
5. Responsible for long-range planning, including additional features, design, and layout of publication.
6. Solicits new material and obtains permission to publish commentary from other sources.
7. Works closely with sales and marketing to assist in maximizing the advertising potential of the product.
8. Keeps abreast of current events in tax law through pertinent literature, media, and contacts with government officials and others.
9. Participates in company-sponsored conferences, roundtable discussions, etc.
10. Adheres to company style guide and established publication deadlines.
11. Responds to internal and external queries related to published articles. Communicates with members of the press as well as government officials.
12. Supervises subordinate staff, including hiring, recommending raises, disciplinary actions, and termination.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of writing and editing concepts and principles
  • Must be able to evaluate content for grammar, clarity, and coherence
  • Technical expertise in tax law, generally acquired through education, but may be acquired on the job
  • Ability to apply knowledge of tax law and writing concepts in a flexible, appropriate manner to diverse media and formats
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain rapport
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced team environment
  • Must possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Good computer skills, including a working knowledge of MS Windows

REQUIREMENTS

  • JD with LLM in Tax strongly preferred but advanced degree will be considered
  • 6+ of experience in editing, copy editing print and electronic products, including experience in substantive editing of print documents for online presentation
  • Previous experience in tax publishing preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard style manuals
  • Must display sound judgment and problem-solving skills
