TITLE: EDUCATION ASSISTANT 3 - 30 hours per week
DEPARTMENT: Schools
REPORTS TO: Principal
HOURLY WAGE: $33.69 - $35.04 hourly wage effective July 1, 2024

SUMMARY:

With direction from the teacher, and other professionals, the Education Assistant 3 performs advanced personal care, medical or communication duties for physically dependent students, in addition to assisting these students with specific drill and practice activities according to an education plan.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, SKILLS (EDUCATION ASSISTANT 3)

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Requires up to two years of specialized training/coursework specific to the needs of the identified students (e.g. interpreting, Braille transcribing, medical/health procedures, intervening, relevant post-secondary coursework).
  • Two years of specific experience with children or youth with exceptional needs in a school, hospital or recognized community agency or equivalent.
  • May require a valid British Columbia driver’s license.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in the language of instruction in or about the school.
  • Ability to perform individually and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow directions with regard to individualized education plans and the dispensing of medication.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate school and/or personalized equipment (e.g. recorder, computer, communication board, FM System, TTY, brailler, closed caption machine, hearing aides, specialized access software, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Sufficient vision and hearing to perform assigned duties independently.
  • Ability to lift, transfer and assist students as required.
  • Manual dexterity.
Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced personal care duties which are specific to the child and require specialized training (e.g. catheterization using clean technique, application of complex orthotics, seizure management, specialized feeding).
