Overall Accountability
The Education Assistant II is a vital member of the student’s learning teams and works in the congregated classroom assisting students with diverse learning needs. This includes those who have a learning profile that includes academic, social, emotional, communication (moderate - severe), medical and physical needs.
The Education Assistant II aids in educational, behavioral and/or health related programming for students with diverse learning needs as directed by the teacher and therapeutic specialist and supervised by the Principal or designate. This includes Educational Support (ES) II, Starting Points, Next Steps, Observation classes, Rural Diverse Learning and Transition Programs within Calgary Catholic schools. The Education Assistant II is a member of the student’s learning team.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Assists in providing programming support and activities of daily living such as student self-care (dressing, toileting/diapering etc.).
  • Assists students individually and in small groups to achieve curriculum programming.
  • Performs physically demanding tasks to meet the unique and personal needs of students with complex physical and/or medical needs, e.g., hand-over-hand instruction, lifting and transferring, personal hygiene, toileting/diapering, feeding, range of motion, walking and stretching, physical restraint to manage inappropriate behavior.
  • Disinfecting and general housekeeping.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development related to the learning profiles of students they work with.
  • Participates in providing one-on-one (1:1) support for students while promoting a safe, calm and positive learning environment. This may include providing support for LSP goals and other response plans to provide teachers with information regarding the progress of students.
  • May be required to assist with Documenting observations and maintaining records in compliance with Alberta Education mandates.
  • Attending individual student case consults within their assigned hours.
  • Prepares materials in relation to support for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Provides specific supervision of students during out of class time (i.e. recess, class transitions, lunch, accessing diverse learning transportation).
  • Assists in supervising field trips.
  • Assists in managing inappropriate behavior, which may include implementation of NVCI physical restraint techniques (when certified).
  • Assists students during school celebrations, liturgical events, services and attendance at Mass.
  • Demonstrates initiative and independence in the management of class time.

Qualifications

  • Category 4: High school diploma
  • Category 5:
  • Education Assistant Certificate, or
  • High school diploma and the equivalent of a minimum of five (5) years’ experience working with students with Diverse Learning (DL) needs**
  • ** For current employees, successful experience working with diverse learning students is considered work performed as a probationary and/or regular employee).
  • May require any of the following depending upon assignment:
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certificates
  • Lifting techniques
  • Rehabilitation experience
  • Successful completion of training in non-violent crisis intervention
  • Ability to deal with the social/emotional, medical needs and mental health challenges of working with groups of children who are often active and demanding.
  • Ability to use assistive or augmented technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
