We are committed to producing journalism that informs, inspires, and drives civic engagement, with an aim to make Philadelphia a city where everyone thrives.   About the Role Citizen Media Group, which includes The Philadelphia Citizen, Philadelphia magazine and phillymag.com [http://phillymag.com], is seeking a full-time Education Innovation Reporter to cover solutions and impediments to learning in the Philadelphia School District, the region and, when appropriate, higher education. The role reports to Roxanne Patel Shepelavy, Citizen Media Group Editorial Director/Executive Director and Christy Speer Lejeune, Philadelphia magazine editor.   The job will include: * Writing stories that chronicle successful innovations, ideas, curricula, classes and the like that are leading to positive educational outcomes in Philly public schools — and elsewhere — for both websites and the print magazine * Conceiving and executing education service and explanatory sections for Philadelphia magazine * Collaborating with audio, social media and newsletter editors to further amplify Citizen Media Group’s education coverage * Helping to conceive and host occasional education-related events * Concepting new and creative ways to relate schools and education coverage in Philadelphia   Requirements * Two or more years of professional reporting and writing experience, with clips that demonstrate a nuanced understanding of the myriad challenges facing large urban school districts and an understanding of solutions journalism * Familiarity with the School District of Philadelphia and/or other large urban school districts * Knowledge of educational history, trends, challenges, and interventions * Experience with deep reporting and research * Strong organizational skills and proactive approach; ability to work independently and anticipate needs * Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills * Proficiency in Outlook, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and ability to learn new tools quickly * High level of confidentiality and professionalism * Must live in or be willing to move to the Philadelphia area; hybrid/in-person work required * Commitment to Citizen Media Group’s mission and values Compensation & Benefits * Full time * Company-provided computer * Unlimited PTO, 7 paid holidays in addition to team-wide paid break from Christmas to New Year’s Day * Hybrid work, with weekly in-person meetings and frequent in-person events * Health, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability coverage, access to a 401(k) plan, and parental leave options * All full-time team members have the opportunity to use one day each week as a “flex day” to be used as regular personal time, to do deep work or to complete catch-up tasks as you see fit while maintaining your workload * Opportunity to contribute to meaningful civic journalism and organizational growth Application deadline: Rolling   In order to be considered for this position please upload a cover letter along with your resume and writing samples   Citizen Media Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
