COMPENSATION $41.79 - $43.04 per hour (NEE: 24) * the above rates subject to education and / or experience or a combination of both.

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia.
Malahat Nation is looking for the right candidate to join our Community Programs Department. Malahat Nation places great importance on increasing the participation and success rates of Malahat Nation members in education, training, and development. This position is ideal for you if you are an innovator able to engage in the community and you have a strong desire to make a difference in our community.
PURPOSE: The Education Liaison will provide supports to children, youth, families, and staff in navigating the public education system (K to 12) to foster better educational outcomes for the children and youth we serve. The Main purpose of this role is to advocate and help students succeed by developing and maintaining relationships with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and community agencies. This position is fulltime permanent position and will require work in the office, as well as moderate local travel within the local School District 79, with some ability to work remotely.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, arts, sciences, or humanities or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Fully Certified BC Teacher with BC Teachers Federation is required
  • Current CPR and standard First Aid training required
  • Current Criminal Record Check (CRC) including vulnerable sector search is required
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and driver’s abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle is required
  • Effective, December 3, 2021: Malahat Nation has implemented a vaccine mandate requiring all employees to be fully vaccinated against Covid19 to be eligible for employment. All individuals must show Proof of Vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of (2) years experience working within the education system i.e. teaching, teacher on call, and / or assistant teaching
  • Experience working in an Indigenous community with children and youth in either an educational environment child and youth counselling, child and youth care work or social work or equivalent
  • Willingness to learn about Malahat culture, customs, and traditions is an asset

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of BC’s Education System and strong connections with the education sector
  • Experience and knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion issues impacting children, youth, and families
  • Culturally responsive to the needs of a diverse population of children and youth i.e. Indigenous, Inuit, and Métis
  • Basic to Intermediate computer skills for Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite Programs i.e. Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc.
  • Well developed problem-solving and mediation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to share information in a clear, concise, and accurate manner
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to speak and connect about difficult topics
  • Take a positive approach to problem solving
  • Ability to maintain and respect confidentiality of students and families
  • Strong ability to set and follow personal and professional boundaries
  • Experience working both independently and in a team, to create a positive, supportive and flexible work culture

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the achievement of the goals of the Malahat Nation and School District 79 Local Education Agreement (LEA) including organizing LEA working group meetings, agenda creation, tracking of minutes and communication
  • Assist families and advise on education and school issues that may arise
  • Assist in writing of grants including interim and final reporting as required
  • Provide awareness and share information of the LEA to parents and teachers
  • Provide a forum for focus groups and information sharing for parents and community through monthly parenting meetings and focus sessions on education
  • Provide meeting supports with parents, students, teachers and support staff as needed
  • Facilitate building relationships between families and the school
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, school counsellors, support staff and Malahat Nation Education staff as needed
  • Attend monthly check in meetings with Director of Community Programs and School District 79
  • Provide monthly progress reports to Director of Community Programs, including but not limited to a year-end fiscal overview report to Malahat Nation Chief and Council and School District 79 Board
  • Advocacy at a district and provincial level for adherence to the LEA, TRC recommendations and UNDRIP
  • Organize events and activities that support families i.e. introduction and greeting to this service, parent teacher meet n greets with local schools, other school and / or community events hosted by Malahat Nation
  • Oversee gathering and tracking of sharing of information agreements from parents
  • Track and monitor student progress in collaboration with School District 79
  • Review student Education Plans to ensure wrap around supports are provided for students based on evaluations and recommendation
  • Maintain records and documents relating to family/ student connections and school/student meetings
  • Collaboratively support in the creation of ‘Personal Life Plans’ for students through their education
  • Direct and support students and families to access schools, community and government resources that support the pursuit of educational and career goals
  • Provide literacy support programming and or homework groups for students and student family groups
  • Other duties as required.
