Under the general supervision of the Education Research and Administrator I of the Science Office and working with staff throughout the California Department of Education (CDE), the Education Programs Consultant independently and collaboratively performs complex tasks that support California’s statewide student assessment system with an emphasis on kindergarten through twelfth (K–12) grade science content.

  • Monitor the item and test development process to ensure the validity, reliability, and fairness of the science assessments within the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System with an emphasis on K–12 science content. Oversee the administration, scoring, test security, and reporting of assessments within the CAASPP System. Critically evaluate and provide feedback on deliverables. Participate in national work groups as a liaison with advisory groups. Coordinate work with CDE staff in various areas such as curriculum, professional learning, special education, and psychometrics.
  • Evaluate and monitor internal and external assessment data requests to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. Provide technical assistance in the development of specifications for statistical analyses, reporting and analyze and interpret data and provide reports to management and other interest holders. Oversee training provided by contractors and assist district test coordinators with data discrepancies, test results interpretation, and reporting guidelines to ensure data are complete and accurate in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Develop and review program resources primarily for the CAASPP System with a focus on science assessments and instructional resources. Develop and maintain literacy and fluency of the California Next Generation Science Standards (CA NGSS). Work independently and collaboratively with contractors and CDE staff to develop, review, and provide feedback on program resources for a variety of audiences. Prepare presentations, training materials, information packets, newsletters, letters, and emails.
  • Write State Board of Education process and memorandums and meeting items, analyze legislation, develop, and review policies and regulations, develop, and implement Request for Proposals and coordinate the proposal review process, and prepare Budget Change Proposals.
  • Attend required office staff meetings and trainings. Participate on review panels and interview committees for the Science Office and ADAD. Travel to attend and present at program-related meetings and conferences. Complete special projects and other job-related duties as required.
