Job Description: The Education Support Specialist supports and delivers Outreach & Engagement activities as related to its K-12 education programs. Reporting to the Student Programs Coordinator, the Education Support Specialist will deliver developed environmental education classroom and field programs, including school year classroom visits and field trips as well as extensive summer enrichment programming for elementary through high school students. The Education Support Specialist will support other Outreach & Engagement programming, including teacher professional development and public outreach as needed. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Deliver classroom-based and field trip programming to K-12 audiences, ensuring quality and consistency across all educational offerings. Support curriculum development and logistical coordination, enabling the education team to scale programming efficiently. Enhance the impact and visibility of education and outreach in alignment with state education standards and VIMS’ strategic goals. Develop and support high-impact summer camps for grades 3–12, focused on immersive, hands-on learning in marine science. Ensure the safety and supervision of campers during camp and field programming. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in marine/environmental science, life science, or science education or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Valid driver’s license required. First aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain appropriate first-aid certification within 30 days of hire. Working knowledge of coastal and estuarine science, and related environmental issues. Knowledge of educational outreach strategies and principles, with the ability to implement a variety of education programs including classroom and field-based offerings. Proficiency with a variety of software applications, databases and web-based applications. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication and presentation skills, with the demonstrated ability to work with a large diversity of audiences in classroom, outdoor, and professional settings. Ability to work independently. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a strong collaborative team player. Ability to present professionally to internal and external audiences. Work experience in science or environmental based education programs. Preferred Qualifications: Lifeguard certification. Paddling safety and rescue training and/or experience. Demonstrated experience trailering boats and canoe/kayak rigs. Demonstrated experience in aquarium maintenance and supervision. Experience using and maintaining a variety of lab and field gear. Salary: up to $50,000.00 commensurate with experience. Conditions of Employment: Occasional night, weekend, and overnight work is required to meet the job responsibilities. This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
