PERSON SPECIFICATION: EDUCATIONAL COMMUNICATOR

This person specification will be used in shortlisting and interview to select the best candidate. Each applicant should therefore address the person specification in their written application and where appropriate should give examples of how you meet the criteria.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of English and Maths GCSE (Grade C / Grade 4 or above)
  • A Levels (or equivalent)
  • Level 1 Certificate in British Sign Language (Signature) or OCSL Level 2.
  • Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language (Signature) or OCSL Level 3.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Past experience in supporting deaf children.
  • Experience of working in mainstream or special education settings.
  • Previous experience of supporting students’ personal care and supporting mobility.
  • Evidence of professional development relevant to the position.
  • A willingness to undertake training to meet the demands of the job.
  • Knowledge of deaf issues.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive working relationships with students and adults.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with parents/carers and a wide range of professionals.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work without close supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE:

The successful candidates will work within the Hearing Resource Centre, a successful and thriving specialist resource provision for deaf students located within a mainstream secondary school. The post will involve supporting students with hearing and communication needs, alongside additional needs, both within mainstream classes and also in the Hearing Resource Centre, to ensure full access to the curriculum through the use of a range of communication modes, including speech and/or sign language.

PURPOSE OF THE POST:

To support the accessibility and learning of students with deafness / hearing loss, alongside any other additional needs. The students within the Resource Provision for deaf children at The Hathershaw College require communication and learning support; learning will take place primarily in mainstream classrooms, but also within the Hearing Resource Centre.
Summary of Main Duties and Responsibilities

CORE PURPOSE:

  • To contribute to the work of the team for deaf students within the resource provision at Hathershaw College
  • To support the inclusion and learning of deaf students, including those with additional needs
  • To ensure that students from the Hearing Resource Centre receive specialist support so that they are able to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
