ABOUT US

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) advances the university’s teaching and learning mission by providing orientation, training, mentorship, research and innovation opportunities for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars at Western so that they can create inclusive, high-quality undergraduate and graduate learning experiences for students. The CTL team works to foster and enhance best practices in teaching and learning at Western in partnership with the Faculties, Western Libraries, the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Office of Indigenous Initiatives, Student Experience, Western International, and Western Technology Services. The CTL advocates for teaching excellence and research on teaching at Western, nationally, and internationally.
The CTL offers certificates, workshops, conferences, communities of practice, courses, consultations, facilitation of workshops and retreats, and online resources at the instructor, departmental, Faculty and institutional-levels. The Centre for Teaching and Learning is recognized nationally and internationally for its research-based practice, comprehensive teaching assistant and international graduate student programs, extended teaching certificate programs, digital learning resources, and as the home of The Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Master’s degree in educational technology, curriculum development, education, instructional design, or a related field
  • PhD degree in educational technology, curriculum development, education, instructional design, or a related field is preferred
  • ISW Facilitator Certificate preferred

Experience:

  • 2 years of progressive experience developing resources as well as designing and facilitating workshops/programs on digital learning for instructors across a range of teaching modalities
  • 2 years of experience teaching at the college or university level
  • Previous experience facilitating educational development opportunities
  • Experience coordinating events and managing projects
  • Experience facilitating online or blended workshops for instructors in a post-secondary setting is preferred
  • Experience conducting program evaluation and project management preferred
  • Experience in course design and continuous curricular improvement is preferred
  • Experience facilitating institutional curricular renewal or review processes preferred
  • Teaching and/or course development experience in blended and/or online modalities is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of adult learning theories and their application, with skills in developing instructional resources and activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding (i.e. functionality, application) of educational technologies for enhancing pedagogy, and outcomes based curriculum design
  • Knowledge of theory and principles of effective teaching and learning strategies, activities and assessments
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of instructional design theories, models, and strategies suited to an online learning environment preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience and practice in training, program development and one-on-one consultations
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems, knowledge of D2L Brightspace an advantage
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management and the ability to manage multiple projects, people, and schedules within an academic term framework preferred
  • Ability to quickly research, evaluate, and recommend the viability of new technologies and innovations in digital learning
  • Ability to relate to faculty academically and bridge understanding of disciplinary pedagogy into various delivery formats
  • Ability to work with a variety of faculty members, subjects and teaching styles while establishing proactive, positive consulting relationships
  • Decision making skills to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of online courses based on best practices and evaluations from students and instructors
  • Effective presentation skills to both small, large and diverse audiences
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, professional and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

The Educational Developer, Digital Learning is critical to the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s mandate of promoting innovation in digital learning and supporting departments and faculties in curriculum design and renewal. The Developer advises on the incorporation of digital tools and pedagogy in all synchronous and asynchronous teaching modalities, from in-person to fully online, both in individual courses and across academic programs and units. The Educational Developer also researches and designs programs and services to support technology-enhanced teaching excellence and to respond to new technologies and their impact on teaching and learning, including generative AI and learning analytics.
In addition, the Educational Developer supports departments in program-level curriculum review and renewal, including providing consultation during the design of program learning outcomes and assisting with program mapping, constructive alignment, and continuous improvement both generally and in relation to key strategic initiatives such as EDIDA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Decolonization, and Accessibility) and Indigenization. The Educational Developer also provides leadership, training, and one-on-one design support for departments and faculty in their efforts to enhance teaching and learning.
