EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Possession of post-secondary diploma from an ASL/English Interpreter Training program at a recognized educational institution.
  • Three years of proficient interpreting experience.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related post-secondary education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Active membership in the Association of Visual Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) and/or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, U.S.A.

DEMONSTRATED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Capable of working flexible hours and with a variety of stakeholders/students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships and to work effectively as a team member in co-operation with school personnel, parents/guardians, community professionals and students.
  • Ability to establish trust and rapport with students and staff.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture.
  • Personal suitability.

Responsibilities
  • Participates as an integral part of the educational team by:
  • providing communication access between students and staff members who are deaf or hard of hearing and others;
  • offering feedback and insight concerning the appropriateness and effectiveness of interpreting services;
  • collaborating with teachers with respect to communication strategies, and
  • providing effective and quality support to the learning needs of students.
  • Provides interpretation between spoken English and the language or mode of communication used by students and staff members who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Serves as a resource to teachers, Education Assistants and students with regards to ASL vocabulary and concepts when required.
  • Provides tutorial assistance to the student(s) under the direction of the classroom teacher.
  • Provides interpretation in settings pertaining to the school environment if deemed suitable by the student, counsellor, school administration and/or parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • Interprets at special functions such as assemblies, field trips, graduation, open houses and other educational experiences requiring communication.
  • Prepares for interpreting duties through self-study, acquiring subject materials being presented and communicating regularly with teachers.
  • Displays and promotes professionalism, a high ethical standard in interpreting and a knowledge and practice of The Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada code of ethics and The Alberta Premier’s Council document “Standards for Interpreting in Educational Settings”.
  • Incorporating current theoretical and applied knowledge to increase competency in the field of interpretation.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet educational objectives.
