DEGREE IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) INTERPRETING, CERTIFIED ASL INTERPRETER CREDENTIALS, AND 1+ YEAR OF EXPERIENCE AS AN ASL INTERPRETER IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. APPLICANTS WHO DO NOT MEET THESE QUALIFICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

This position involves providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) high school students to facilitate effective communication with hearing peers, teachers, and school personnel. The role requires working primarily in academic settings and related school activities to support students’ educational and social inclusion.
Location: Newport News, VA Two high schools

Position Details:

  • Contract assignment for the full school year (Approximately August 21 June 11)
  • Up to 20 hours per week
  • Two openings available
  • One interpreter for a 9th-grade student with knowledge of approximately 1,000 signs (sole interpreter)
  • One interpreter for an 11th-grade student who is fluent in ASL (sole interpreter)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide ASL interpretation during classroom instruction, meetings, assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Facilitate clear communication between DHH students and others in the school environment.
  • Support the academic and social development of students using ASL as their primary communication mode.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to ensure accessibility and effective learning for DHH students.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in education, ASL interpretation, or related field preferred.
  • Virginia certification as an Educational Interpreter preferred; pending licensure or state reciprocity considered.
  • Minimum of five years educational interpreting experience preferred.
  • Skills in academic vocabulary and understanding of developmental stages in K-12 students.
  • Availability to travel between multiple school locations if required.
