DEGREE IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL) INTERPRETING, CERTIFIED ASL INTERPRETER CREDENTIALS, AND 1+ YEAR OF EXPERIENCE AS AN ASL INTERPRETER IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. APPLICANTS WHO DO NOT MEET THESE QUALIFICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

A school-based opportunity is available for a skilled Sign Language Interpreter in the Portsmouth, VA area, supporting K-12 students during the 2025-2026 academic year. This contract position involves working approximately 7.5 hours per day, totaling 37.5 hours per week, from August 11, 2025, through June 1, 2026. The precise campus location and grade levels will be determined, with caseloads expected to include several older high school students undergoing transitions.
Responsibilities include providing interpreting services in both one-on-one and classroom settings, ensuring clear and effective communication access for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. Additional duties may involve light paraprofessional tasks to support student learning and engagement.

Qualifications desired for this role:

  • Completion of high school education or equivalent, supplemented with specialized training in sign language interpretation.
  • Considerable experience acting as an interpreter, demonstrating proficiency in conveying nuanced communication.
  • Possession or eligibility to obtain Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification, or its equivalent, by the hire date.
  • Candidates holding VQAS Level II certifications will have a two-year window from hire to achieve Level III status in compliance with Virginia Department of Education regulations.
