SCOPE

Reporting to the Director of Care, the Educator will support a vision of excellence in nursing practice by enhancing staff development, orientation, education, and performance evaluation through their expertise, support, and direction in clinical practice activities. The Educator plays a pivotal role in strengthening the nursing workforce, serving as role models and providing the leadership needed to implement evidence-based practice.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Active or eligible for registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support-Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP) through Heart & Stroke Foundation.
  • Experience within the past 5 years working as a Educator in a Supportive Living/Long Term Care environment.
  • Good understanding of current best practices in palliative and hospice care and ability to integrate them into daily care.
  • Experience in program development and instructional design and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated leadership and change management skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience within the past 5 years working as a Educator in a Supportive Living/ Long Term Care environment.
  • Experience with teaching RAI MDS 2.0 HC as well as Point Click Care (PCC)
  • Adult education certificate, or equivalent.
Responsibilities
  • Incorporates best practices and evidence-based standards into education, facilitate orientations and learning programs, monitor/provide feedback on staff performance (in conjunction with Supervisor), and evaluate effectiveness of holistic resident care delivered,
  • Addressing any issues identified and compliance with required legislation, standards, regulations and Federal and Provincial Acts.
  • Participating in audits, inspections, investigations, and surveys including, but not limited to the Continuing Care Health Service and Accommodation Standards, collaborates with the Care Manager in the response and action planning, and implements any follow-up QA required for any nursing related allegations
  • Identifies the educational and training needs in the facility to ensure quality of care and services.
  • Designs, develops, and coordinates the delivery of Monthly Education Calendar to meet these needs.
  • Ensures good resident outcome and satisfaction through training needs of staff.
  • Develops general orientation and ongoing educational programs based on learning needs of staff.
  • Communicated the planned program to encourage participation, involvement, and support.
  • Provides programs to enhance the working life and increase knowledge and esteem of the staff.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness and quality of Monthly Education Calendar against appropriate objectives and standards.
  • Receives feedback from staff and department heads on training programs.
  • Monitors modern technology, trends in the delivery of each service and ensures staff are trained appropriately.
  • Maintains staff attendance in-service records and quality management activities for the program.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Resident Bill of Rights/Governing Principles and endeavors to promote it.
  • Establishes adequate resources material on health-related books, for nutrition, activities, and environmental departments.
  • Performs clinical teaching sessions on the units as needed.
  • Responsible for teaching health and safety issues such as WHMIS, lifts and transfers and back care.
  • Responsible to carry out legislated duties for health and safety as per the certification training program.
  • Responsible for point in time education and evaluation materials
  • Coordinate and serve on the various committees responsible for staff development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
